Hint: Think on the lines that they left America for a War and when left the perception of the people was changed. A changed america is referred to the changed perception of the people.

In sentence construction, if we attribute X and Y to something, then both X and Y should be both equal in meaning and structure. One cannot be a verbless modifier and the other a verbed predicate. Choice A, B, C, and E attribute America (an object) to being tormented, a participle, while the second factor by virtue its action verb, refers directly to the subject, the veterans. This divergence is not acceptable. D, on the other hand, by introducing the connector 'that ' for the second factor, converts it into a relative class modifier, thus making the sentence parallel. D is the answer.

Kindly let me know why B is wrong, "an America" seems to be wrong to be.

Vietnam veterans returned to America tormented by the controversial conflict and offered no warmth, gratitude, and enthusiasm enjoyed by soldiers that returned from other military actions

Dear Kunal - I agree that the phrase "an America" seems weird but do not see anything wrong grammatically.
However, even if you keep the choice with "an America" on hold, you can quickly discard the other choices. Choice B actually does not convey the correct meaning.
Choice B says that the soldiers who returned to America offered no warmth, gratitude and blah blah blah. In reality it is America who offered no warmth.
Hence, you can discard the Choice B.

Thanks !
Please consider giving Kudos if my explanation helped you in any way !

Hello,

Option B is incorrect because of the word "that". We never use "that" to refer back to the humans. We only use "who" or "whose". Hope this helps!

E. an America that had been tormented by the controversial conflict and did not offer the warmth, gratitude, and enthusiasm to be enjoyed by soldiers returning from other military actions

A: Vietnam veterans...tormented by the controversial conflict...did not offer the warmth
B: Vietnam veterans...tormented by the controversial conflict...offered no warmth
C: Vietnam veterans...did not offer the warmth
These options convey that soldiers returning war -- soldiers who in A and B are TORMENTED -- did not offer warmth.
This meaning is nonsensical.
No one expects a soldier returning from battle -- especially one who is tormented -- to offer warmth.
Eliminate A, B and C.

E: Vietnam veterans returned to an America that had been tormented by the controversial conflict and did not offer the warmth
Here, it is unclear whether the intended subject of did not offer is VIETNAM VETERANS or AN AMERICA.
The OA avoid this confusion as follows:
Vietnam veterans returned to an America that had been tormented by the controversial conflict and THAT did not offer the warmth.
Here, the inclusion of the green THAT makes it crystal clear that the intended subject of did not offer is an America.
Since the intended meaning in E is not crystal clear, eliminate E.

Vietnam veterans returned to America tormented by the controversial conflict and did not offer the warmth, gratitude and enthusiasm enjoyed by soldiers that returned from other military actions

A. America tormented by the controversial conflict and did not offer the warmth, gratitude, and enthusiasm enjoyed by soldiers that returned from other military actions---> Senseless. Did not offer what to who? It is not clear in this version

B. America tormented by the controversial conflict and offered no warmth, gratitude, and enthusiasm enjoyed by soldiers that returned from other military actions-----> Senseless. The soldiers offered no warmth? It should be America to offer warmth

C. America, which had been tormented by the controversial conflict, and did not offer the warmth, gratitude, and enthusiasm enjoyed by soldiers returning from other military actions----->America is modified by a sentence between commas, so the problem with did not offer remain because in this case it modifies soldiers. So its senseless

D. an America that had been tormented by the controversial conflict and that did not offer the warmth, gratitude, and enthusiasm enjoyed by soldiers returning from other military actions---> correct one. An America that had been tormented expresses continuity of something happened in the past. That did not offer expresses correctly that it was America to negate the warmth and so on

E. an America that had been tormented by the controversial conflict and did not offer the warmth, gratitude, and enthusiasm to be enjoyed by soldiers returning from other military actions----->Keep the problem of A, did not offer these thing to who? It looks like it offers these things to everyone, not just soldiers.

D

At the end of the day, I think that all the options here were correct but it was basically a matter of meaning

"an America that..."
Does it imply that there are more than one America and that the veterans returned to one of them?
Or is it acceptable when “an” functions as an emphasizer? For instance, 'an' America that is different from the one the veterans left?

"B. America tormented by the controversial conflict and offered no warmth, gratitude, and enthusiasm enjoyed by soldiers that returned from other military actions"

Hey, guys, I have a doubt. I know the answer and I understood that B was wrong because of the noun modifier's absence.

Keeping it aside. the sentence has no warmth, gratitude, and enthusiasm.......

can I understand that as no warmth, no gratitude and no enthusiasm..............
or No works only for the warmth but not for gratitude and enthusiasm.?
please clarify me
