Starting Prep for GMAT

Question

Hey, I joined this forum recently, have to start my MBA prep from scratch, I'm clueless about which online GMAT course should I choose for my prep? Need to prepare and give the exam ASAP, some guidance please on recommended courses and where to start?

I come from Delhi, so not a native English speaker, and would need to work on both verbal and quant as I don't have any pre-existing edge in the either.
Also since I'm working as a software engineer, so I would need to juggle work with the prep(like many others), have 2.8 years of experience at the time of writing this.

When are you planning to give your GMAT?
Also, any idea about which sections are weak?

First of all, I suggest you give a mock exam to see where you stand currently.
It's best to give the official mock on mba.com. However, people plan to save the 2 free mocks for later, so you can give mocks from ManhattanPrep or Veritas as well. They are also pretty accurate.

Before Joining a course, I suggest you try the trial versions of various prep companies such as egmat, Manhattanprep etc.

For self study, you can refer to the below mentioned resources.

Since it sounds like you're just beginning your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can take 2 for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have that Score, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

The key to score well on GMAT is to do the prep in the right way. A lot of students do not do that properly and as a result struggle with the prep. You can go through this   article   to understand the right way to strategize your prep.

And I would suggest you to spend some time in analyzing the free trials of the online courses. Do a proper research, know in an out of them and choose the one which suits you the most. Having said that, there are a few parameters which you should keep in mind while evaluating the courses. Having said that, as you are a working professional, you would want to choose an online course which can help you with a study plan. Because if you are clear of what to study on any given day, it makes life easier for you.  But a person who can spend 4 hours a day for studies cannot have the same study plan as a person who can spend just 2 hours a day.  So, the study plan has to be personalized, that is, the study plan has to be according to the number of hours one can dedicate for studies. Regarding prep courses, in addition to seeking advice in this thread, take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for  the best quant  and  verbal courses , and also read through some  GMAT success stories  to see what materials have worked well for other test-takers.

Also, would you like some general advice on how to improve your verbal and quant skills?

Hey KattySnappy, You can start by taking an official mock from mba.com to see where you stand. Based on that, you can plan your studies. And regarding the online courses, it's better to check the free trials of the courses and decide. But as you seem to be in a hurry, I would suggest you to go with GMATWhiz as I found to be good with all the modules and as it helped me improved my score from 570 to 720.
