Thanks for the post.

You have an interesting background that many schools will find interesting. The schools on your list cover are very broad and have very different admissions criteria and philosophies and your candidacy will be well received at many. From an admissions perspective, the weakest part of your application appears to be your undergraduate record. I would recommend that you re-take the GMAT and try to get a higher score - as a higher score will shore up your academic credentials.

I also want to emphasize that given the competitive nature of the schools you are targeting, your applications have to be top notch -- including your essays, recommendations, resume and all other controllable aspects of your application. Simply put, it is that important.

From the schools on your list, I think Stanford and HBS are going to be difficult -- this does not mean that you should not apply -- just realize that they are very competitive -- your chances would be better at Wharton. Also, MIT and Haas have very low acceptance rates -- meaning that while you can be competitive at these schools, that you have to make sure that you market yourself correctly to what they are looking for. With all the other schools on your list, with compelling applications, I see you being a competitive candidate.

Good luck.

All very good points - thank you for the advice. To be honest, I've very confident I can raise my GMAT, but I just want to see where I stand as-is.

In regards to the school selection, are there any schools that I should just cross off the list right away? Is Wharton too far off from my goals, or is UCLA too safe to spend an application on?

Goals
Short-term goal: To work as a consultant at a high-tech consulting firm
Long-term goal: To become CTO of a world-class firm in the high-tech industry and be on the forefront of driving cutting-edge technology.

Schools
Stanford
Harvard
Columbia
MIT
Haas
Ross
Kellogg
NYU
Tepper
UCLA

Your stats are fine for any of these schools - I would say only take the GMAT again if you know you can improve and really want to go to Sloan. That's probably the only school on this list where a 730 is gonna mean more than a 710 (due to this forumla they use that weights components).

Playing the Sesame Street game "one of these things is not like the other" (in this case a couple), Columbia and NYU seem a little out of place given your tech goals. MIT is a no brainer, and Stanford, Haas, and UCLA recruit well in the Bay area if that's where you want to end up. A dark horse would be McCombs - Haas and Stanford are both tough nuts to crack - as they place surprisingly well in the Bay area too.

Only other school that looks out of place is Kellogg, if only because there are many other schools on your list that fit your goals better.

Haha - impressive use of a Sesame Street quote. Actually, that should have been Wharton. I've already crossed Columbia off my list for the reasons you mention. You could probably make the same case for Wharton too, but I feel they are much more rounded.

Also, I kept NYU on my list because of location, really. New York has really been booming in the tech scene recently. But again, I may be off base, and if NYU would not be a good fit that's definitely the feedback I'm looking for.

I've definitely looked at McCombs too. The problem is that I'm trying to weed out my school list, and Austin seemed a little low. Not that it's a bad school - infact, like you said it might fit my goals really well. It's just that I'm really aiming for that Top 15 MBA (plus the UCLA safety app).

EDIT: And in regards to Kellogg, I like them as a top tier school with a decent acceptance rate. As Manhattan and yourself noted, the really sweet tech schools have really though acceptance rates. On paper Kellogg looks like a jack-of-all trades school with a high acceptance rate.
