Hi MBA Admissions Consultants,
I am hoping to get some guidance on whether my profile fits target schools I am intending on applying for in Fall this year. My intention is to transition from Management Consulting to Investment Banking or Private Equity post MBA. However, the couple of MBA administrations consultants I spoke with indicated my profile was very generic as I do not have much international experience and could "slip through the cracks". Any thoughts on this?
1st round MBA Targets: Top 10 B-school choices: Harvard, Sloan, Wharton, Columbia, Stern, Yale, Cornell, Berkley,
Academics
- GRE Score: 1540 (800Q, 740V) - Top 1% or 770 GMAT Equivalent
- GPA: 3.54 from a Big 10 state school
- Double Major: Finance and Accounting
- Minor: Economics
Profile
- Age: 28 by matriculation
- Sex: Male
- Ethnicity: Asian American (US Citizen) who grew up in the Midwest
Professional Experience
- 3 years: Mergers and acquisitions management consulting at a Big 4 firm with both buy and sell-side experience. I was promoted the first year at the firm to Senior Consultant.
- 2 years: Corporate development finance rotational program at a super regional bank. I assisted in the biggest acquisition the bank has experienced at the time through several internal consulting projects.
- Certified Professional Accountant
Volunteering
- Empower local inner-city high school students to pursue entrepreneurship by providing business training and teaching general business concepts
- Provide local community enhancements through environmentally and urban friendly initatives
- Pro bono consulting advisory for local small business entrepreneurs
Extra Curricular Activity / Hobby
- Local Yaht Club Member

Your profile as given shows nothing that would make me discourage you from applying to any of these schools. Cornell, Yale, and Stern should be especially doable. Whether you have what it takes to get admitted to schools like HBS, MIT, Wharton etc. will depend on details you didn't provide -- depth of leadership experience, perhaps the distinctiveness of your personal story, etc. But zero red flags and lots that's impressive in what you have given us. Thanks for the response. I'm definitely looking to get more guidance on my application both in terms of my essays, resume and walking my recommender through drafting the letter.
