Hello! I'm a 26 year old Spanish male and am planning to apply for an MBA on 2015 R1, and I was hoping you could do a preliminary evaluation of my profile
Academics:
700 GMAT (48Q/37V) – Score from September 2013, will retake.
107 TOEFL. Taking it again next month, aiming for 110+.
MS in banking management and financial markets (1 year, including a 3-month internship) at a tiny school in Spain. We were a class of 15 students, not very competitive to get in. The only disclosed grade from the program is a 96% at an exam to earn a trading license.
Undergrad: BS in business management (majored in finance) from a public Spanish university with an average grade of 7.6/10 with the best grades in finance courses. The school doesn´t disclose grade percentiles but I strongly believe I´m in the top 10-15% of my graduating class.
Languages: apart Spanish and English, took 4 years of Russian (intermediate level) and 3 years of Chinese (basic level) while studying the undergrad degree.
Work experience:
3.5 years (will be 5 by the start of the MBA) at the capital markets department of a mid-sized Spanish bank. Rotated through all desks for 8 months and now am focused on institutional funding and structured products, although my tasks are very varied and I´m back-up for almost everyone at the department.
Got in the career development program of the bank in 2012 and promoted once in January 2014 through an internal exam in which I got the highest grade among 292 test takers. Promoted again in May 2014 through the career development program.
Extracurricular Activites:
- Member of the corporate volunteer program through the bank´s foundation. As a member I am:
A volunteer teacher of basic finance to people from all types of backgrounds (20-30 students per class).
Cooperating with local food banks to distribute and organize food donations.
A volunteer to help organize races (5k, 10k, half marathons and marathons), mainly focusing on assisting wheelchair racers.
- Member of the corporate trekking group. We go trekking once a month.
- Running: 5k, 10k and half marathons.
- Other hobbies include scuba diving (certified) and salsa dancing.
- While I was studying the MS, I volunteered as a member of the Erasmus Student Network (one of the largest international student organizations) for the first year it was established in my hometown, helping international students find a room/appartment and integrate with the rest of the student community.
Why an MBA? Limited ability to progress further in my current position. Although I like what I'm doing right now, what I feel passionate about is everything that's fast paced and related to news-driven trading or investment management. However, I have limited exposure to this in my current role and therefore I'd like to use the degree to stay within finance but with a stronger focus on investment management (or sales & trading).
Goals: short term: transition to a role along the lines of investment management or S&T. Long term: become a portfolio manager focused on cross-asset management.
Other information:
- First in family to complete higher education.
- Played online poker semiprofessionally to support myself through undergrad (should I ever mention this?)
Target schools:
- Reaches: MIT, Tuck, Yale (I think I'm kinda shooting for the stars with these ones)
- Targets: UNC, UVA, Cornell
- Safety: Boston College
What do you think of my odds at these schools?
Thank you very much for your advice and apologies for the length of the post!
