a short question about the resume and work experience..

Hello,

I had founded and led a brand design company for 3.5 years during my undergraduate studies in engineering (company is unrelated to my education). I have a rich story to showcase my leadership skills through the projects I have done for a variety of clients, also i maintained a 3.4 gpa simultaneously.

question: is entrepreneurial venture helping or handicapping my profile? how will adcoms view it?

Also, I am an artist and I am interested in marketing.

question: is it a good idea to create a graphical resume? (not as abstract as the "google resume" but one which is decent, clear and crisp)

Good questions!

Entrepreneurship experience: Yes, it’s probably helpful and a good idea to mention it. However, be sure to integrate it into your overall story, e.g., explain what motivated you to do it, and what skills/perspective/growth it gave you relevant to your goals.

Resume : I suggest a straightforward, succinct business resume. It’s not the place to get creative.

Your entrepreneurial experience demonstrates a number of qualities that an admissions committee may like to see: initiative, leadership, management experience, organization, an ability to conceive of new ideas and bring them through the process of execution, etc. With that in mind, your experiences in the startup may be excellent material for one of your essays, can possibly be included in your resume, and should also be prepared for during your interviews.

Understand also, though, that an admissions committee would also like to see advancement from what you've once done. Your undergrad startup should not be the peak of your professional existence, so also consider using your startup experience as material for lessons learned or as a reference point to demonstrate your maturation and professional development.

I would not get overly creative with the application itself, though, unless a program you're applying to offers some multimedia option (which a few schools have done over the past couple years).

So make the connection for the AdComm into how you have developed via this experience. Also, the overall connection to other aspects of your candidacy.
