Hi,

Would love some help in evaluating my profile. Any advice will be appreciated.

I imagine my profile will not be like the usual profiles that you receive but I do hope you can provide some way of guidance.

Qualifications: Bachelors in Arts (Journalism and Communication) from Manipal Institute of Communication.

Work Experience:
2 years of experience as Brand Services Manager in Lowe Lintas India. Handled Britannia accounts. By the end of two years, I was running my own advertising campaigns and handling every aspect from brief creation to execution of television commercials and other deliverables. At the end of two years (June 2018), I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue in corporate marketing and took a year off to explore other interests and opportunities. In this year I had interned in two NGOs, doing a wide variety of work from marketing, HR and communication while being exposed to some of the wonderful work these NGOs were doing.
This brings me to why I want to do a management degree: would love to get into NGO management, handling the business-related aspects of NGOs, or the CSR arm of companies.

Test Scores with breakup: I haven't written my GMAT yet and am planning to give it by late July.
Given my current test scores I say it would be between 660 to 680.

Interested in: Full-time MBA/MiM
I am seriously looking at Singapore and Europe. Any advice for these countries?

1. I need a frank idea of what my options are. I have heard from many people that MBAs are more widely accepted and respected and MiMs not as much. Is this true?
2. Do you have any advice on how to strengthen my profile during my degree to get into NGO management or CSR? Any words of advice on NGO management and clearer picture of what it entails? I know what I know solely through the internet.
3. Given that I have taken a gap year, and will be enrolling only in 2020, how will this affect my chances?

Hi Antkrish!

Let me answer your questions one by one:

1. MBA and MiM are two programs significantly different from one another. The differences do not end at the difference in experience levels and ages of the participants - they extend to the curriculum and opportunities also. The focus on MiM is more theoretical whereas MBA programs are typically focused on real-life problems. This will translate into different types of job opportunities for the graduates of these programs. Though MiM is a great option for students who are interested in jumping to a management profile without much prior experience, MBA remains the flagship program for most schools and has better access to a multitude of opportunities. Also note that most of the MIM programs prefer candidates with less than 2 years of experience after graduation - so it is highly likely that they will want you to apply to their MBA program.

2. I am not entirely sure what you mean here. You mentioned that you took a year off to work with NGOs which sparked your interest in NGO management. You should get in touch with your colleagues at these NGOs to learn more about the profile. In general, from what we understand, you are probably looking to work with a non-profit like Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The opportunities are limited and it doesn’t directly connect with your core experience. You have done well to work with Lintas and handle some popular clients. Use it to your strength and explore short term opportunities that are aligned with your past experience.

3. Since you left your job at Lowe in June 2018 and you are planning to matriculate in 2020, this will be a gap of over 2 years. I would recommend that you continue working with NGOs to get a deeper understanding of your post-MBA options. It will be important to show growth here and also talk about the impact you made during these stints. If you don’t have any specific motivation or reason to work with nonprofits right after your MBA, you may build on your advertising and branding background and move to the nonprofit sector in the medium to long term.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you would like to discuss this further. Good Luck!

Hi

Thanks for the response!
I have found that most programmes require three years or more for MBA programmes. I'm not sure if my internships really count.
Given that it would make most financial sense for me to complete my graduate studies as soon as possible, I figured an MiM would be a better fit for me. Do you know of any MBA colleges that actively accept students with 2 years of experience?

I just concluded my last internship on June 1st and thought of taking a break till Aug to focus entirely on my GMAT preparation. Considering I would begin the application process only by November, do you suggest that i take up more internships? I dont want admission officials to think I have wasted my time, which is my biggest worry with a gap year!
