Hello, here's my profile:

Hispanic Male 27 at enrollment
4 years WE at major oil company (Chevron, Exxon, BP) as contract worker. They won't hire contactors after downturn full time. Essentially not viewed differently than full time employees, I've gotten 2 promotions from Engineer I to III
720 GMAT 39V/49Q
3.05 GPA Petroleum Engineering from state school (Auburn, LSU, Bama, UH) I have a reason though. I was diagnosed with cancer senior year. I suffered symptoms all college and it greatly effected my studies, but never thought it could be anything serious. I'm clear now.

Applying through Consortium to some schools
EC's: Prospanica active member, Urban League active member, Youth Basketball Ref, Society of Petroleum Engineers
I have a patent for an engineering process

Schools applied (Very long list because I don't wanna leave any chances. I've spent the appropriate time on each app): HBS, Wharton, CBS, UT, Berkeley, Tuck, MIT, Yale, Booth, UVA, Stern

I've researched schools and directed essays to make a fit. Please give me a range of schools where you think I'd have a 50/50 shot to get in. Thanks!

Good Job on the GMAT. The GPA will hurt a bit, but given that it's from a STEM degree it is not as bad as you would think, and being a cancer survivor definitely speaks something. You do want to make sure that your transcript and your story align though - since you mentioned that it is during your senior year that you were affected, it should be shown that your grades were affected towards the end of your degree.
One thing you left out is your career goal - that is something that the adcom will care. They want to see how you are planning your overall career trajectory.

Assuming that you want to go into general management, consulting, think you would have a chance at UT, UVA. Your reach would be CBS, Tuck and Yale. I am not sure about Stern since it tend to be more finance focused, but can't say for sure.

Correct, short term goals are engineering management. Long term are COO of an oil company or Vice president of operations.

Anyways, I am quite optimistic about your profile. Feeder company, 2 promotions in 4 years is definitely impressive! I doubt there will be a overabundance of Hispanic O&G Engineers applying to these schools so focus on how your background, combined with your industry/role expertise will lend to a unique perspective in the classroom and outside the classroom, if possible.

Solid GMAT; that won't keep you out of any schools and I feel it will alleviate any concerns about the GPA. Agreed that your grades need to be strong up to senior year (or speak to how symptoms impacted your resilience/ability to study/focus, etc.) So the optional essay needs to convey that. My heart goes out to you, I have lived with an undiagnosed condition trying to fight through it. How did you get into an oil major when you were fighting cancer? That must be an interesting story of determination, I imagine.

I think it's awesome that you have a patent. If you can tie this into your career goals even better.

How involved have you been with these EC activities? Have you progressed in those roles; any proof of impact there? Value add that you can claim individually or as part of a team? This information is good but would be helpful to know more about how you have demonstrated leadership inside/outside the workplace, more about your past history of contribution in college and after. This reflects the quality of the content of your apps.

Also would be good to know more about your hobbies, things that show you as well-rounded, and if you have international work experience, have you worked in a foreign country offshore, that kind of thing.

Regarding goals, are you looking to do a post-MBA LDP at a major? Clear idea of post-MBA role and what will help you get there/how the MBA positions you to achieve it? Would you have connections to prospective employers? Would be helpful to gather this kind of information as I feel this is what would help me assess if you are viable for top 5 vs. top 10 or 15. Might include Duke on the list, they have a lot of resources for O&G.

Congrats on being the first in your family to graduate college and to have conquered cancer. These things will give some depth and interest to your applications if executed correctly in the essays.

I have two short term goals.... petroleum engineering management role with a major which I believe I could attain after speaking with my boss at the major oil company. The other is oil and gas consulting role with a firm. I have networked with 2 of the 3 MBB and they have told me this is definitely a route I could take with a top 10 program. This could be a stupid question but what is the common MBA concentration for people who do consulting (specifically energy consulting)? I think there aren't many petroleum engineers with MBA's from top programs so I could stand out in an energy consulting role.

As far as community service, I attend Prospanica and Urban League monthly meetings and participate in community service once or twice a month.

Erl and Gas... Oil and Gas. I'm from Louisiana, so I hear it pronounced this way in the field.
