One way to look at it is that When you are determined that you want to leave the industry (IT) then working in that industry 'less responsibly' becomes easier and doesn't cause much of stress.

If you really hate it there then you can make a move and consider working in a start-up that can give you greater responsibility in shorter tenure. This way your exposure would be better and you will be able to justigy the move during application. At the same time, you may consider getting some certifications (based on marketing skills/language competency etc.) which will add additional value in your profile.

GMAT requirement stays there. get 700 or above :)

Hi,

Thanks for this opportunity and taking out time to look at my profile. If you need anymore information please let me know.

Background: I am an Entc engineer graduate with 7.4 CGPA.(Indian female)
Profession: Working at an IT firm since the past 3.8 years. At my work I am a application developer and a part of the business analyst team too. I am responsible for the technical support and the business analyst teams. I participate in all kind of client discussions, their requirement meets and suggesting solutions to them. I was also worked on the front end UI modifications for my project previously.
Extracurriculars:: I am very involved in extra curriculars and community service activities. From school till even at work I have organized major events and contributed to many CSR activities. I have a vast industrial and diverse exposure.
Post mba: I want to move to marketing and brand management side since I have a good knowledge of client handling, product requirements and how to project them. I am also working on getting multiple digital marketing certifications too.

GMAT: I have given GMAT once but didnt score well but I am preparing for the same and will be appearing soon and targeting a score of 680-700.
Focus colleges: I wish to apply to the top MBA colleges of canada, singapore and UK for the fall 22 intake.

Question: What do you think about my profile?
I am going through a major dilemma is: I do not like the IT job and it is becoming difficult for me to continue. I want to quit the job since it is giving me anxiety that is affecting my GMAT prep as well. But I want to look out for something in digital marketing- an internship or a job. Since this year will be my application year and if I leave my current job and try for an internship will my profile look bad?
What impact will this have on my application? What are your suggestions on this should I continue the job or look for something I would love to pursue?
Please help me, I really need some guidance with my issues as I am becoming more and more stressed.

Regards,
Antara.

Hi Antara,

Lets answer your question one by one.

What do you think about my profile?

Your profile has some good points -- a. 3.8 years of work experience lies in the idle work ex range for MBA colleges. b. Your extra curriculars are strong.
Other than that, Engineering plus IT is the routine profile for majority of the applicants. Anyways, you should not worry about the profile, that is something which cant be changed to the great extent. You can always create a great application and perform well in interviews.

I am going through a major dilemma is: I do not like the IT job and it is becoming difficult for me to continue. I want to quit the job since it is giving me anxiety that is affecting my GMAT prep as well. But I want to look out for something in digital marketing- an internship or a job. No, leaving the job will not weaken your job application, in fact it will strengthen it. If you apply with your present job, you will be just like thousands of other applicants. But if you apply with a profile which reads like this -- "I always wanted to explore the world of marketing and my job responsibilities didn't match my true passion. Instead of accepting this situation as my fate, I listened to my heart's calling. I felt that I was good in marketing and hence I left my job and took an internship in a marketing role. I want to further pursue my passion by studying marketing management....etc....etc....", you have a greater chance to get noticed in the pool of applicants and you will bring something different to the table.

Always do what you love.

Hi Antarag,

Thank you for your post. While many seek out an MBA when they have reached a plateau at work or are ready to switch careers, you are not alone in navigating a job change while applying to MBA programs.

If your IT job is no longer providing you with any growth opportunities, it certainly makes sense that you would look for something elsewhere. As long as you are able to clearly communicate how this career change ties into your MBA goals, the timing of this career change should not be an issue. While it depends on the situation, having 5 to 6 months at a role is a good minimum before applying to business school.

That said, I do not recommend leaving your current job if you do not have an internship or full-time position locked down (this career gap may be a red flag to admissions committee members).

This kind of job advice and decision-making is part of our early MBA planning services. Take a look at our site to see how we can help you make all of the right decisions in the months leading up to your applications. Our early planning clients do best in terms of acceptances and scholarship money.
