Below is my analysis

Comparing stats of its students with that of students of other schools, Vista Del Sur reported that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, and that they scored 30% higher than the mean score of students from other schools in the district.

A. Vista Del Sur reported that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, and that they scored 30% higher than the mean score of students

INCORRECT:

Here the subject is "Vista Del Sur". From this sentence, it nonsensically saying that - VDS reported X and they scored 30 %...bla bla bla. We don't need AND here. the other part is basically modifying Score of 630

B. Vista Del Sur reporting that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, said that they scored 30% higher compared to that of students

INCORRECT:

1) reporting is wrong, it should be REPORTED.
2) 'They' ==> No Clear referrent

C. Vista Del Sur reported that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, a score that is 30% higher than the mean score of students

CORRECT ==>> 1) "Comparing stats of its students" is correctly modifying " Vista Del Sur"

2) "A score that is " is correctly modifying 630

D. mean SAT score of Vista Del Sur students, as reported by it, on subject based tests is 630, a score 30% higher than the students’ mean score
INCORRECT ==> "Comparing stats of its students" should modify "Vista Del Sur"

E. subject based tests have the mean SAT score of 630 scored by the Vista Del Sur students, a score 30% higher than the students
INCORRECT ==> "Comparing stats of its students" should modify "Vista Del Sur"

Shraddha

After the opening modifier the noun should come that is taking the action of comparing. so a,b and c remain. B is wrong because of the incorrect tense. Progressive tense is wrong, the act of comparison has already been done. a is incorrect because of incorrect comparison. Students didn't score 30% higher compared to the mean score. C is the answer.

IMO C

Option D,E are due to modifier error.
Option B is also incorrect due to many reasons: "higher compared to" , "reporting"
In option A "and that they " seems incorrect.

A. Vista Del Sur reported that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, and that they scored 30% higher than the mean score of students

what Vista Del Sur reported was a single information, as Vista Del Sur was comparing the results of its stuents and the results of students of other school, so the piece of information after the and is not a separate observation, also this is wordy. Hence incorrect

B. Vista Del Sur reporting that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, said that they scored 30% higher compared to that of students

the use of reporting is not correct

C. Vista Del Sur reported that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, a score that is 30% higher than the mean score of students

correct

D. mean SAT score of Vista Del Sur students, as reported by it, on subject based tests is 630, a score 30% higher than the students’ mean score

"comparing stats...other schools" should modify Vista del Sur, which is not the case here. Hence incorrect

E. subject based tests have the mean SAT score of 630 scored by the Vista Del Sur students, a score 30% higher than the students

same as in option D here too "comparing stats...other schools" should modify Vista del Sur, which is not the case. Hence incorrect

(A): "and that they scored" could mean tests or students
(B): "reporting" is wrong verb to use here
(C): looks okay
(D): the SAT scores are not doing the comparing, the school is
(E): the tests scores are not doing the comparing, the school is

My guess is C

Hi Shraddha,

Is the answer C.

Here is the explanation for my answer choice

Meaning of sentence: Vista Del compared the stats of its student with that of other schools and reported that
a. the mean score of its student on the subject based tests was 630
b. and they scored 30% higher than the mean score of the other students from other schools

Analysis:
A. Vista Del Sur reported that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, and that they scored 30% higher than the mean score of students -------> Keep on hold for time being
B. Vista Del Sur reporting that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, said that they scored 30% higher compared to that of students -------> No verb for the subject Vista Del sur
C. Vista Del Sur reported that mean SAT score of its students on subject based tests is 630, a score that is 30% higher than the mean score of students --------> the sentence means that mean SAT score was 630 and this score was 30% higher than the mean score of other students from other school ----This is Noun +Noun Modifier structure modifying the score 630
D. mean SAT score of Vista Del Sur students, as reported by it, on subject based tests is 630, a score 30% higher than the students’ mean score -----> Verb-ing modifier modifies mean SAT score which is not logical
E. subject based tests have the mean SAT score of 630 scored by the Vista Del Sur students, a score 30% higher than the students------> Same error as D

C is correct.

"students" cannot be antecedent of they, "... score" can only referred.

Yes. C is definitely the correct choice.

But I have a question regarding the non-underlined portion of this problem.
"Comparing stats of its students with that of students of other schools..."

Shouldn´t it be
"Comparing stats of its students with those of students of other schools..." since "stats" is plural?

What do you think?

Thanks!

I was reading the explanations given by people over here. I think that most of those were wrong.
Error in choice "A" is comparison error. They scored 30% higher than the mean score. Here comparison is wrong.
They have been compared to the mean score, this comparison is wrong.
In B error is not of verb. Error is same as in A. Comparison error. and also of idiom error.
correct idiom is higher than not higher compared to.

IMO C is correct but for different reasons.
