I have a doubt regarding answer choice D as I think it should be E.D changes the meaning.The diary helps to understand a certain time period in a certain part of the world (mostly Europe) where Jews faced the atrocities and transgressions.
But E implies that the diary helps to understand the world war 2.World war 2 was much bigger and was fought across the globe.I think E mimics the internal meaning.
I also think that this question will not cross the door of the gmat cause one can solve this question just by using just as...so idiom.GMAT is not that easy anymore.
