Jenny’s dream was to become the first female mayor of her home city, but while running in the mayoral election, cancer was detected and another candidate had to be chosen.

(A) while running in the mayoral election, cancer was detected and another candidate had to be chosen.

(B) while running in the mayoral election, Jenny’s cancer was detected and another candidate had to be chosen.

(C) while running in the mayoral election, cancer was detected and another candidate was chosen.

(D) while running in the mayoral election, the cancer was detected and another candidate was chosen.

(E) while running in the mayoral election, a cancer was detected and another candidate was chosen.

(A) while running in the mayoral election, cancer was detected and another candidate had to be chosen. In Whom?

(B) while running in the mayoral election, Jenny’s cancer was detected and another candidate had to be chosen. Though not perfect option, conveys an idea that it was jennys dream to be mayor, she could not be because of her cancer.

(C) while running in the mayoral election, cancer was detected and another candidate was chosen.

(D) while running in the mayoral election, the cancer was detected and another candidate was chosen.

(E) while running in the mayoral election, a cancer was detected and another candidate was chosen

The question essentially boils down to the meaning conveyed. A cancer, The cancer do not talk about jenny, as the underlined part does not talk of Jenny, but about Jennys dream.

In option "B", it is simple past (have to - had to) not past perfect.
