Juana is dining at a Chinese restaurant. She will order either combination platter #2 or combination platter #5, but not both. If she orders combination platter #2, she will eat fried rice. If she orders combination platter #5, she will eat an egg roll.

Given the statements above, which of the following must be true?

(A) Juana will eat either fried rice or an egg roll but not both.

(B) If Juana eats an egg roll, then she ordered combination platter #5.

(C) If Juana does not eat an egg roll, then she ordered combination platter #2.

(D) If Juana eats fried rice, then she ordered combination platter #2.

just few facts that will help you in answering the Q..

so ...
1) she will eat either #2 or #5 but not both
2) Egg roll and fried rice are NOT dependent on #2 or #5 BUT #2 or #5 are dependent on egg roll and fried rice

actual meaning.. 
1) If she orders combination platter #2, she will eat fried rice..
 If NO fried rice, NO #2 
2) If she orders combination platter #5, she will eat an egg roll.
 If NO egg roll, NO #5

Official Explanation

It is very important to distinguish what is called necessary conditions from what is called sufficient conditions. A necessary condition is one that must occur for a particular event to take place, e.g., oxygen is a necessary condition for a fire. A sufficient condition is one that is by itself sufficient to ensure that a certain event occurs, for example, failing the final exam of a course may be sufficient to guarantee a failing mark for the course. This distinction is the key to this item.

A statement of the sort  “If X, then Y ”  (as used here) sets up a sufficient but not necessary connection. For example, ordering combination #2 guarantees that Juana will eat fried rice, but that may not be the only condition on which she will eat fried rice. For all we know, combination #5 also includes fried rice. Thus,  (A), (B), and (D)  are wrong. As for  (E) , the statements that set up the problem talk specifically about Juana, not about people in general.

The correct answer is (C).

 Wrong. She could order #2 only and eat both fried rice and egg roll.

(B) If Juana eats an egg roll, then she ordered combination platter #5.
 From "if A then B" we cannot deduce that "if B then A"

(C) If Juana does not eat an egg roll, then she ordered combination platter #2.
 Correct. Logic is "if A then B" then "if not B then not A"

(D) If Juana eats fried rice, then she ordered combination platter #2.
 Same as B

(E) Anyone who orders combination platter #2 eats fried rice.
 Wrong.

@broall- can you please explain your line of reasoning for A. Why did you say... she could order platter 2 only and eat both? By this logic... she could order platter 5 only and eat both too? Thanks for the help!

That is the trick in this question. The question said that she could order either #2 or #5, this means that she can't order both or none.

However, the question didn't said that she could only order either fried rice or egg role. This means that she could buy additional things as she wishes. For example, she order #2, so she must eat fried rice. However, she could still buy egg role. That's the case in choice A.

@broall- excellent insight. Sorry to use a metaphor. In zen, there is something called awakening. Sometimes people struggle with something for hours, days or year and they can't figure out the answer. And they have a moment of enlightenment.

(E) Anyone who orders combination platter #2 eats fried rice. - Anyone? Incorrect

flatter 5 --> egg roll

no egg roll --> no flatter 5 (obviously flatter 2). we are told that "She will order either combination platter #2 or combination platter #5, but not both".

It has to be C, contrapositive !

(A) Juana will eat either fried rice or an egg roll but not both. - can eat both also. if #2 -> fried rice, but can also egg roll also
(B) If Juana eats an egg roll, then she ordered combination platter #5. - mistaken reversal => if A -> B, if B NEED NOT BE A
(C) If Juana does not eat an egg roll, then she ordered combination platter #2. -> contrapositive -> if A -> B => if ~B -> ~A
(D) If Juana eats fried rice, then she ordered combination platter #2. -> Same as B - mistaken reversal 
(E) Anyone who orders combination platter #2 eats fried rice. -> Out of context.

Hi All,

I can see why C works. But I see no reason why E shouldn't be correct as well. Combo platter #2 is a fixed combination set. If Juana would eat fried rice if she ordered this platter, so would 'anyone' else. Am I missing something here?
