The argument says " A → C, and because "not C → not A"....Answer D bears the same logic.

hi, can you elaborate a little bit more ?
I am still struggling to understand the question.
I do not believe this question has any gmat pattern

I think you don't need to pay much attention to the wordings like "communicate" etc. The argument can be shorten like:

Journalist: can you give me A ?
Novelist: your A in your definition means C in my definition (or you can think like biscuit (A) in British English means cookie (C) in American English). But I don't have C (cookie) so I can not give you the A (biscuit) that you mean. So in short it says: A →C, but not C→ not A. And answer D has the same logic.

Journalist: Can you give a A of the B you are working on?

Novelist: I assume by "A" that you mean C. However, the reason I create B is that I want to communicate something that cannot be done via C. So I am afraid I cannot give you anything like A in a way that would tell you what I am trying to communicate.

Which one of the following exhibits a pattern of reasoning that is most parallel to that used by the novelist?

Novelist brings C and uses it to say no by giving a reason behind doing so. A = C, C' ---> B'. So, A' ---> B'.
So, statement of novelist is somewhat circular.

(A) Only if a drawing can be used as a guide by the builder can it be considered a blueprint. This drawing of the proposed building can be used as a guide by the builder, so it can be considered a blueprint. - WRONG. If Drawing usable ----> Blueprint. Drawing is usable so it is a blueprint. Simple, plain and nothing else.
(B) Only a statement that does not divulge company secrets can be used as a press release. This statement does not divulge company secrets, but it is uninformative and therefore cannot be used as a press release.
(C) Watching a travelog is not the same as traveling. But a travelog confers some of the benefits of travel without the hardships of travel. So many people just watch travelogs and do not undergo the hardships of travel. - WRONG. Watching travelog ≠ travelling. But travelog has benefits of travel. Then the choice goes in straight line not circular.
(D) Only a three-dimensional representation of a landscape can convey the experience of being in that landscape. A photograph taken with a traditional camera is not three-dimensional. Therefore a photograph taken with a traditional camera can never convey the experience of being in a landscape. - CORRECT.
(E) A banquet menu foretells the content of a meal, but some people collect menus in order to remind themselves of great meals they have eaten. Thus a banquet menu has a function not only before, but also after, a meal has been served. - WRONG. Again simple and plain logic.

Unfortunately, I chose B over D. Now i find B as follows:
Statement not divulging secrets(A) ---> Press releasable(B). Uninformative(C) Statement not divulging secrets(A) ---> Not press releasable(B')

D as follows:
3D representation(A) ---> experience of landscape(B). Traditional Camera photo(C) ---> not 3D(A') ---> no experience of landscape(B')

Answer D.
