Evidence: intraocular pressure increased more quickly when using screens for more than 6 hrs per day

A) The study repeatedly measured the values, so this is not useful -> INCORRECT
B) We're told in the prompt why/how intraocular pressure is correlated to vision system health, so this does nothing in assessing the force of the evidence -> INCORRECT
C) If screen time is a habit that doesn't actually increase intraocular pressure (i.e they are related but not by causation), then the evidence used is significantly less forceful -> CORRECT
D) This does nothing to assess the force of the evidence but rather

The conclusion is heavy daily screen usage (which causes increase in intraocular pressure (IP), as per the study), causes vision impairment (since increase in intraocular pressure is associated with vision impairment)

Option A: The question stem expressely talks about heavy screen time causing an INCREASE in intraocular pressure, whereas this option talks more about the volunteers already having elevated reading even before they used screens heavily. Since this would not help us understand if the intraocular pressure is actually increasing because of the screens or not, we can eliminate this option.

Option B: Intraocular pressure could or could not be a good indicator of overall eye health. We are only concerned with an increase in IP and its effect on vision impairment. Moreover, that information is already given to us that increase in IP is associated with vision impairment. We can eliminate this.

Option C: Since we need to relate heavy screen usage to increase in IP and subsequently vision impairment, this option actually helps us. If there are other habits of the teens, apart from heavy screen usage, that increase IP, this could help us conclude if heavy screen usage is the main culprit or not. This is the correct answer.

Option D: Even if it did, it still does not give uas sufficient evidence to neglect all users whose IP indeed actually increased due to heavy screen usage. We can eliminate this.

Option E: This is just a statement. Even if vision impairment is caused by other things, it still does not help us conclude if it happens due to heavy screen usage or not. We can eliminate.

Hence, C is the correct choice.

A = We are not discussing highest or lowest, we are discussing pace of increase - Irrelavant.

B = We are not discussing reliability of pressure. Irrelavant

C = Correct. If these teens also have other habits that could increase introcular pressure rapidly, it would be helpful to know this.

D = We are not concerned with this group

E = We are not concerned with what other causes lead to visual impairment. Irrelavant.

Pre thinking. The conclusion is heavy screen time leading to intraocular pressure causes vision impairment. We need to find if there is anything causing intraocular pressure which isn't screen time.
A. even if the inityial readings were higher, increase is a rate and it has nothing to do with a baseline
B. Good to know about realiability, but it is not helpful to the conclusion
C. CORRECT, if there is anything to show this, then screen time may not be the reason for quick increase
D. Even if there are, it won't help with the conclusion
E. This is introducing another factor not in the study

According to be B
A- If already IOP is increased in the beginning then experiment would not be favourable- no
B- Reliability of IOP is important for conclusion to hold, otherwise argument will fall apart. Hence.
C- If they are already using screens for more than 6 hours and any other contributor is there, we wont be able to differentiate
D- few discrepancies can be there, but will not affect conclusion entirely
E- Very tempting choice. I just didnt select this one as I felt that paragraph is specifically asking for IOP's contribution to vision loss.

Need to identify a confounding variable.
If something else common. to heavy screen users caused the pressure increase.

A. High pressure at start dont explain why heavy screen user's pressure increased faster
B. We know elevated pressure is assosciated with vision impairment. Best or not is not the concern.
C. "Other habits" If these other habits can increase the pressure, not the screen time can explain the result.
D. Doesnt really weaken the finidning that heavy users increased more quickly
E. Irrelevant, researches only claim heavy screen use contributes through increased pressure.

IMO C.

I was able to Eliminate A, C, and E Easily. Was a little confused between C and D.
Lets breakdown:
Argument Mapping: Using Screen More than 6 hours -> Increased Intraocular Pressure -> Vision Impairement

A: Whether volunteers had already had elevated reading has no effect on the Conclusion
B: Irrelevent
C: Previously I thought it should be nothing to do with the other habits, but pay attention to the statement "common among teenage who use screen for more than six hours". It points out that the teenagers who is already spending more than 6 hours have some other habits as well that is causing the IP. Best to evaluate.
D: One major thing to remind is that our target is not to focus on the teenager who spend less than 6 hours (Its irrelevent in this context)
E: Doesn't align with the conclusion at all. Eliminate

If A(extra screen time) causes B (increased intraocular pressure) and B is associated with C(vision impairment).
To assess the validity of this statement if their are any other causes of B then that should be known as right pointed out in Option C.

Option D and E actually weakens the hypothesis of B and C going together.
Option A and B are irrelevant

(B) intraocular pressure is a reliable indicator of overall visual system health compared with other eye measurements. It doesn't tell whether screen use is the cause. NO

If any other habit other than high screen time can also increase the intraocular pressure. Then maybe high screen time alone wasn't the reason. ANSWER

Let's understand the stem first:

Researchers measured intraocular across four years for thousands of teenagers.
They found that intraocular pressure increased faster for teenagers who used screens for over 6 hours a day.
It is a stated as a fact that intraocular pressure is linked to visual impairment.

Conclusion drawn: Higher screen usage leads to visual impairment.

Now let's look at the options:
A) The paragraph clearly speaks that researchers noted a FASTER INCREASE in intraocular pressure. The fact that the volunteers had elevated intraocular pressure at the start is immaterial as the comparison happens in terms of pace of increase, and not the final levels. Option invalid.

B) The statement clearly states that intraocular pressure IS linked to visual impairment. Hence, how reliable it is in comparsion with other metrics is imamterial. Option invalid.

C) This is interesting, if there are other habits that lead to increased intraocular pressure, this directly challenges the conclusion that screen time leads to visual impairment, as it can be a combination of screen time and a second habit (that increases intraocular pressure), or a different habit altogether (that leads to a greater increase in intraocular pressure) leading to visual impairment. We hold onto this option.

D) If it is indeed the case (let's say not sleeping enough also contributes) it does not negate the theory, it merely adds another layer to it. Eg: If the answer is YES, it will mean that this other factor as well as screen time lead to visual impairment. If NO, it would still mean that only screen time leads to visual impairment.

E) Visual impairment can indeed result from other factors (an accident, aging etc) The question does not say that visual impairment occurs ONLY due to intraocular pressure. The question says that it can speed it up.

(C) holds up the best.

2) we need to assess if screens are indeed causing this.
A: Irrelevant
B: Contests a premise, out of scope
C: Correct. there are other habits, our conclusion weakens. If there are no other habits, our conclusion strengthen

Arg says IP increased more quickly in users who were using screens for > 6hrs
Conclusion - since IP is related to vision impairment, screen use leads to vision impairment
looks like a 'correlation -> causation' trap question

A) doesn't matter if the IP was higher initially since study only talks about 'increase' - ELIMINATE (this was tricky and a big trap!)
B) even if it's a reliable indicator, 'screen use' may not cause impairment, there could have been another factor - ELIMINATE
C) this talks about alternate cause - that maybe another factor is causing IP, not screen use - if that's the case theory fails - ANS)
D) out of scope - we do not need any info about folks who use screens less - ELIMINATE
E) out of scope - we need to know about IP, what else other than IP may cause impairment doesn't matter - ELIMINATE

Understand the flow of conclusion here:
More than 6 hours/day of screen time< intraocular pressure increased more quickly< Vision impairment.
The conclusion states that heavy daily screen use contributes to vision impairment
Pre-think: I thought there could be a flaw in reasoning if those who had screen time more than 6 hours/day but this did not increase intraocular pressure and something else did or the intraocular pressure that was increased was quickly reset after getting away from screen and the teenagers did not access the screens daily.

a) this would not have a significant effect on our evidence for the conclusion and did not say MOST or all the volunteers it just told us the teenagers with highest intraocular pressure
b) it is irrelevant and does not help us assess
c) this is the exact way to weaken the evidence if it states 'yes' then the force of the researchers' evidence would be weak and if stated 'no' then we would no no other than screen time increased the intraocular pressure and therefore the researchers' evidence is correct. - CORRECT
d) Irrelevant as this does not tell anything about those who have increased intraocular pressure due to more than 6 hours/day screen time
e) Elevated intraocular pressure is associated with Vision impairment and is not said to be the only contributing factor to the vision impairment. This option is a trap.

Evaluate options

A) the readings at start and end are not relevant here - reject
B)even if iop is reliable, me don't know if increased tv time is the cause for increased iop - rej
C. This checks if teenages who see TV >6hrs have some other habit that’s causing Increased iop and not the tv watching time - like video gaming
- so this is useful
D) this is against the premise - reject
E) that may be the case but the other reasons are nt in scooe for evaluation- rejct

A. If they had high IOP at end doesnt address if the screens caused IOP increase
B. Does not show that screen time increases IOP
C. Best Answer. Maybe the teenagers using screens have other habit that contribute to increase IOP. Example lack of exercise.
D. Incorrect. Study is that they experienced faster increases, not that they experienced any increase with less screen time.
E. Dont care. Question is whether heavy screen time contributes to impairment through increased IOP not if there are other causes.
