Since $1.99 is 1 cent below $2, let's check the maximum quantity chocolate eclairs that Eddie can buy. $
28/2 = 14 => but we know that $1.99 is 1 cent below $2, so 14 x 1 cent = 14 => $28 - 14 cents = $27.86 => therefore Eddie must have bought at least one box of one dozen for $13.99
therefore, $27.92-$13.99 = $13.93
$13.93 is 7 cents below $14 => Eddie bought 7 chocolate eclairs

it clearly couldn't buy 2 boxes of donuts...as 2 boxes cost 27.98
so...27.92 - 13.99 = 13.93.
if eclairs cost 2$, then we need 12$ to buy 6, and 14 to buy 7.
since we approximated up by 0.01 each eclair, 14.00-0.07 = 13.93 = exactly what we need.

therefore, he bought 7 eclairs for sure!

Easiest way to solve this problem is process elimination.
Let's start with A
A is 7
Let a represent chocolate
Let b represent donuts

1.99a + 13.99b = 27.92
(2a - 0.01a) + (14b - 0.01b) = 27.92
(2(7) - 0.01(7)) + (14b - 0.01b) = 27.92
(14 - 0.07) + (14b - 0.01b) = 27.92
13.93 + (14b - 0.01b) = 27.92

b has to be 1 to get 27.92
PROOF

27.92 - 13.93 = 13.99

Answer is A :-D

Sorry maybe this is a stupid question, but how do we know that Eddie purchased both donuts and eclairs for $27.92? from the question info we know that store sells two types of products, and that Eddie spent some money there. We know nothing about his preferences to buy both donuts and eclairs for his brunch. please correct me if i'm wrong..

hence Eddie must have bought 1 glazed donuts.. Remaining value is used for chocolate eclairs & is equal to 27.92 - 13.99 = 13.93

The no. of chocolates Eddie purchased = 13.93 / 1.99 = 7

Answer A.

Looking at the choices we know that the donut box cannot be more than one.

So, we can deduce it to ->
1.99x = 27.92-13.99
(2-0.01)x = 13.93

Now try options -
option 1 - 14-0.07 = 13.93
And hence A is the answer
