Asked: When positive integer N is divided by 1463, the remainder is 41. What is the remainder when N is divided by 11?
1463 = 11*133
Nmod1463 = 41
Nmod11 = 41mod11 = 8

When positive integer N is divided by 1463, the remainder is 41. What is the remainder when N is divided by 11?

A) 4
B) 5
C) 6
D) 7
E) 8
Solution:

Since 11 divides 1463 (notice that 1463/11 = 133), the remainder when N is divided by 11 is the same as when 41 is divided by 11. Since 41/11 = 3 R 8, the remainder is 8.

Alternate Solution:

One possible value for N is 1463 + 41 = 1504. (We know this is true because, when 1504 is divided by 1463, the quotient is 1 and the remainder is 41.)

Therefore, if we divide 1504 by 11, we get a quotient of 136 and a remainder of 8.

From the question, we see that 1463 is divisible by 11. So considering 41 as the remainder, when we multiply it by 11, we get 8 as a remainder. So answer - Option E

When positive integer N is divided by 1463, the remainder is 41. What is the remainder when N is divided by 11?

When we are faced with a question like this one about an integer N for which some mathematical fact is true, if there is no qualifier indicating otherwise, the question implies that there can be only one answer for all such integers N.

In other words, the correct answer must be the same for any N such that the mathematical fact is true.

In this case, the mathematical fact is that the remainder when N is divided by 1463 is 41. So, the answer must apply to all integers N such that, when N is divided by 1463, the remainder is 41.

So, let's use the EASIEST to handle integer N for which that mathematical fact is true. That integer is 41.

When, 41 is divided by 11, the remainder is 8.

A) 4
B) 5
C) 6
D) 7
E) 8
