There are 40k people in the crowd, and a family of 4 leaves. Therefore, the number of people remaining is: \(40k-4\)

We need to find how many times larger the remaining crowd is than the family: \(\frac{40k-4}{4}\)

Shortcut: we can divide every term by 4: \(\frac{40k-4}{4}=10k-1=9,999\)

Answer: C

There is a crowd of 40k people including the family of 4. 4*10k is equal to 40,000. When you take away the family of four you have one less set of for so 10,000 (sets of four) - 1 (family of four) is 9,999.
