(2) s is positive: No info about r .
Combined together, still no info about r whether r is positive or negative.

Target question: Is s = r?
Statement 1: s² = r²
When we square a number, the result is always greater than or equal to zero. So, this statement doesn't FEEL sufficient. As such, let's TEST some values.
There are several values of x and y that satisfy statement 1. Here are two:
Case a: s = 1 and r = 1, in which case s = r
Case b: s = 1 and r = -1, in which case s ≠ r
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: s is positive
Without information about r, there's no way answer the target question with certainty.
So, statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT
Statements 1 and 2 combined

Case a: s = 1 and r = 1, in which case s = r
Case b: s = 1 and r = -1, in which case s ≠ r
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, the combined statements are NOT SUFFICIENT
