In the diagram below, triangle ABC is right-angled at B. What is the measure of ∠BAC?

(1) BD = BC and AE = AD.
(2) BE = DE.

Hi...
A simpler way as someone has asked
COMBINED..
Angle DBC=angle DCB=x
AED=ADE=y
EBD=EDB=r
Now the equations..
1) from angle ABC=90..
r+x=90.....(i)
2) from triangle AED and ∆EBD
y=2R.....(ii)
3) from ∆ADB and ∆BDC..
r+y=2x.....(iii)

Three variables x,y and r.... Three equations above..
Sufficient

Yes, instead of calculating Y, you can calculate X and since we know angle B in the larger triangle ABC is 90, knowing X, we can simply calculate required ∠BAC by 180 - 90 - x. This would not require you to calculate Y.

chetan2u confused by your explanation, see highlighted below

Hi...

Angle DBC=angle DCB=x shouldn't it be ∠BDC = ∠DCB? since prompt is DB=BC
AED=ADE=y
EBD=EDB=r
Now the equations..
1) from angle ABC=90..
r+x=90.....(i)
2) from triangle AED and ∆EBD
y=2R.....(ii)

Highlighted the portion where i'm confused. Can anyone tell how was this relationship derived?
