How much did a certain telephone call cost?

(1) The call lasted 53 minutes.

(2) The cost for the first 3 minutes was 5 times the cost for each additional minute.

Question: How much did a certain telephone call cost?

Statement 1: The call lasted 53 minutes.

Tariff of call (i.e. charge per min of call) is unknown hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: The cost for the first 3 minutes was 5 times the cost for each additional minute.

Tariff of call (i.e. charge per min of call) is unknown along with the duration hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining the two statements

Tariff of call (i.e. charge in dollar or cents per min of call) is unknown along with the duration hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: Option E

Dear GMATinsight

Can you please help me interpret statement 2 in math equation? How to build the relation between the 3 minutes cost and cost of additional minute?

Thanks in advance
Mo2men
That only means that
If cost of 4th Min on call = a
then cost of first 3 minutes = 5a
i.e. cost of 5 min call will be (5a) + a + a = 7a

I hope it helps! :)
