If x ≠ 0, is x greater than y?

(1) x > y + 2

No matter what the value of y, x will always be greater than y if the above condition is true.
Sufficient.

(2) 2 + x > y

This means x > y - 2
If x = y-1, then the above condition will lead to "NO" as an answer.
But if, say, x = 10 and y = 5, then the above condition is satisfied and we get "YES" as an answer.
Insufficient.

Answer A.

If x ≠ 0, is x greater than y?

(1) x > y + 2
(2) 2 + x > y

Happy New Year Australia/New South Wales, South Australia!

Statement 1:

We always have \(y+2>y\) so we can combine inequalities to get \(x>y+2>y\), therefore x > y is true. Sufficient.

Statement 2:

Now we have x > y - 2, so if \(x=y−1\) then x is less than y. There are also a lot of values where x > y so insufficient.

Ans: A

If x ≠ 0, is x greater than y?

(1) x > y + 2

Let's try numbers ....

Positive Nos >>if X = 5, Y = 2 ; X > Y Yes
Negative Nos >> if X = -2, Y = -5; Is X > Y .. Yes
X + and Y - >>> If X = 2 Y = -1 ; Is X > Y ...Yes
Y + and X is - >> IF Y >> does not satisfy st 1

St 1 is sufficient.

(2) 2 + x > y

X > Y -2

If both X and Y > 0, i) X = 4 Y = 5 Is X> Y ...No
ii) X = 5 and Y = 2 ..IS X>Y ...Yes

Two different answers ..,hence insufficient.

x ≠ 0
QUe: x > y?

(1) x > y + 2
if x > y+a => x>y ;if a is positive it will increase the value of y and x is already greater than the inflated value of Y+2 => x>y
SUFFICIENT

(2) 2 + x > y
x>y-2
=> x > y or x<y

case 1: if x = 3; y = 4
x+2 = 5 > 4 but x<y

case 2: if x = 5, y = 4
x+2 = 7 > 4 and x>y
Not Sufficient

If x ≠ 0, is x greater than y?

Stat1: x > y + 2, whatever, we put value of y, x will be greater than by 2. Sufficient

Stat2: 2 + x > y, if x=-1 and y=0, 2-1>0 satisfies then x is not greater than y. But, if x=1 and y=0, 2+1>0 satisfies and x is greater than y. Not sufficient.

So, I think A. :)

Given X is not equal to 0
Assumption Required, X&Y may be +ve, -Ve or both equal.

St1- x>Y+2
This implies that X will always be greater than Y since, we are adding a +ve no. On one side.
Sufficient.

St2- 2 + x > y
Here x can be equal to Y or may be not Hence, insufficient.

Correct Answer A

If x ≠ 0, is x greater than y?

(1) x > y + 2
Y+2>Y - can be said for all value of y
=x>y+2>y
= x>y
- Sufficient

(2) 2 + x > y
x = 1 y = 2 - x<y
x= 4, y = 2 x>y
- Not sufficient

We are given x is not equal to 0. x > y is the question.

Statement 1
x > y+2
y+2 > y (Inequalities property)

Using these 2 relations we can conclude x > y as x > y+2 > y
So statement 1 is sufficient

Statement 2
2+x > y
x+2 >y
y < x+2
x+2 > x
Here we can not derive a relation between x and y using the expression above. x could be greater than y or less than y
So statement 2 is insufficient

Hence the answer will be A

Happy New Year Australia/New South Wales, South Australia!

Dec 31 Event: GMAT Club Around The World!
(38 new questions posted every hour time zone on Dec 31!)

From the first statement, it is evident that x is greater than y+2. Thus, it is implied that x is greater than y. Sufficient.

From the second statement, it is not evident that x is greater than y. Since, x can be greater than y-2, but can be less than y. thus, not sufficient.

IMO, option A is the correct answer.
