Hi Everyone,
Need your help streamlining my thoughts on which school I should look to attend, especially as the deadlines approach for making deposits. I'm currently considering between Darden UVa [Full-tuition merit (named) scholarship] vs. SOM Yale [~30-40% merit scholarship]. I have visited both the schools and liked their tight-knit communities. In general, I'm not so fixated by a school's location that I make it a decisive criterion for school selection.
I have an international background but have been living in the US for the past 6 years. I studied engineering (MS) in a great public university on the West Coast and have been involved in engineering management in a F500 company located in Silicon Valley. Post-MBA, I want to ideally spend a few years in MBB management consulting focusing on strategy and operations before returning to the high-tech industry (preferably cleantech) in Silicon Valley with a position in business management. If I cannot get through to MBB, I am also open to directly entering the high-tech industry (for example, in general management rotation programs) right after school.
I also want to emphasize that I have not yet applied for a Permanent Residency in US, so I will be considered an international student for recruiting purposes at the B-school (Not all recruiters sponsor international students).
SOM:
+ IVY League brand of the parent university, well recognized internationally (especially in my home country if I transition there in the longer term)
+ Proximity to NY; ease of networking for potential recruiting opportunities in a growing NYC cleantech industry?
+ Great new building and new dean, positive upward momentum in rankings? ... Financial Times 2014 global rank improved from 14 to 10
+ small class size
+/- Partial scholarship covers (only) 35% of annual tuition cost.
- Weak recruiting in consulting?
- Small alumni network of SOM; a very weak network back in my home country.
Darden:
+ Strong focus on case-based learning; might be a challenging new learning style for me, but at the same time a great source of personality development.
+ similar class size as Yale
+ Full-tuition (named) merit scholarship: heard that having it on resume helps in recruiting; no student debt
+ Alumni network bigger than Yale SOM; greater presence in my home country
+ Better focus on MC recruiting than SOM?
- Remote location means more competition for on-campus recruiting jobs; Full-time jobs for international students declined from 91% to 79% in 2013
- Parent university (UVa) brand name not as recognized as Yale, but in business circles Darden is considered a solid program.
Greatly appreciate your feedback!
