I was admitted to Tepper and to McCombs. My goal is MBB consulting and I prefer it by far other options. I am open to tier 2 consulting as a worst case fallback, and it has to be management/strategy consulting.
Which school do I pick? Tepper will be about $20,000 cheaper.

Congratulations on your admits!
Looking at pure numbers, for the year before craziness started, they look pretty much identical. About 25% going to consulting from both schools.
I don’t think they’ll be an edge per se since likely the same company is higher on campus and it’s more determined and dependent on the applicant and your profile rather than which school you attended.
One could argue that Tepper offers a more national footprint and slightly stronger brand but it is really hard to tell based on generic aggregates. There are obviously different arms and roles within consulting that range anywhere from outsourcing all the way to management consulting with the Chicago and New York office is usually being the most competitive and coveted which is a double edge sword. If you get in, it’s awesome, but At the same time, if you strike out, game over and often with how the cycles work, you won’t be able to try again for another office.
Once you get beyond the top 10 in the rankings, the school influence becomes more regional and I would perhaps focus on that. Tepper is more of East Coast and a bit of Midwest and McComb’s is definitely Texas
. I feel taper also has the CMU in play for it (but I would bet money on it, it’s just a nice bonus - it’s really hard to quantify things like that besides just saying there’s a chance it may show up somewhere and be a nice perk in a meeting with a client or something like that) anyway, if you think you will never live in Texas or in the south, then I wouldn’t really head over to Austin. If you were thinking You will be anywhere else, then Tepper would be a stronger network.
PS. I was looking at consulting in general rather than just MBB. MBB is tricky. It’s very competitive and you are competing with applicants from a variety of schools. You will also be competing with every single one of your classmates. There is a ton of preparation involved and a good amount of luck. I don’t believe MBB has offices at McCombs but I think they should be frequenting Tepper‘s campus because they are at UNC....

MBB is tough to break into and I do not recall Tepper or McCombs being MBB feeders. However, I prefer Tepper due to their more analytical approach to business education.
