Mohater,
Awesome! I am a prospective Weekend MBA candidate.
Not sure if you are familiar with the program but would like to know how much emphasis is given on GPA wrt applications?
I have a UG GPA of 3.4 (First two years were below 3) - Mechanical Engineering and Grad GPA of 3.3 - Automotive Engineering
My GMAT is 690 - Q48 V37 IR 7
I am confused if i should use the optional essay in explaining my UG GPA for first two years or not. I used to be heavily involved in sports and used to travel a lot, missed quite a few classes (This is the genuine reason!)
Engineering is a much more difficult major than say, business, econ, social sciences, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most people who apply to MBA are prior business people looking for a career change (finance, accountants, HR people, etc all looking for a career change). This is also true for other grad programs (engineers applying to med school or law school) where the lower GPA with an engineering degree is not a hinderance when compared to a higher GPA of say kinesiology, psych, etc.
If you *feel* your GPA puts you at a disadvantage, then yes, use the optional essay, but I don't think your GPA is too low.
GPA is one piece of your application profile. Your profile definitely puts you "on the table" at Ross. Especially for the weekend program. I'd focus more on the required essays than the optional one.
Good luck!
