Let the total expenditure done by Samuel family be $x
11%x - 8%x = 2400
3%x = 2400; x = 2400/3% = 240000/3 = $80000
 The total expenditure done by Samuel family = $80000

If Samuels were able to save 10% of the expenditure on food, the increase in savings would be  20% 
10% of the expenditure on food = 10% *24% = 2.4%
 The increase in savings = 2.4%/12% = 20%

Let the total expenditure inc saving be  T

Expenditure on clothing is 11T/100

Expenditure on fuel is 8T/100

so, 11T=8T+2400*100

3T=240000

T= 80000

Now, 2nd part

Saving on food 10/100*24T/100 = 24T/1000

So new saving will be 12T/100+24T/1000 = 360T/1000 =36T/100

so increase in saving %= {(36-12)/12}*100 = 20%

Solution:  Let total expenditure (including saving) = x
Expenditure on clothing = 11% of x = 0.11x
Expenditure on fuel = 8% of x = 0.08x
Given, 0.11x = 0.08x + 2400
0.03x = 2400
x = 80,000
  Hence, total expenditure (including Saving) done by Samuel family   =  80,000

Next, Expenditure on Food = 24% of 80,000 = 19,200
If 10% is saved from this amount, then amount that goes into savings = 10% of 19,200 = 1920

Original Savings = 12% of 80,000 = 9600
% increase in savings = 1920/9600 * 100 = 20%
Hence,   increase in savings   =  20%

For the first option, we can calculate 0.11 * X - 0.08 * X= 2400, solving for X gives 80,000.
Knowing that food expense is 24%, saving 10% of that is 2.4% of total spend. Adding that to savings of 12% takes savings from 12% to 14.4%. 14.4% / 12 % = 20% increase.

The expenditure on food = 24%*a = 0.24a
The saving = 12%*a = 0.12a
If Samuel family were able to save 10% of the expenditure on food 
-> The saving on food = 10%*0.24a = 0.024a
-> The increase in savings would be = 0.024a/0.12a = 0.2 =  20%
