Brief overview: I gave my GMATprep mock in May 2016 and i scored a 560. I do not remember the breakup at this point, but i figured i had a long way to go. I had given this mock without any preparation, to get a gist of where I stood. Post that i did nothing and the GMAT took a back seat.
It was also at the same time that i was changing jobs so my career took a priority and i ended up changing jobs in September 2016. I gave my self the year of 2016 to settle into my new role and get a hang of the new job.
January - February 2017: I started prepping with a target score of 700+ in mind. I started off by doing nova math, which is WAY tougher than any GMAT level question, but it helped me get back in touch with basics. My background is in engineering so this was a level i was comfortable with. Looking back i would say, that while nova is not close to GMAT in the remotest sense, it does help if you are already familiar and comfortable with math. Following this i did
manhattan prep, but only the concepts.
Manhattan prep's question banks at the end of each chapter are insufficient and they redirect you to use the OG. I had decided not to do the OG till i was nearing my exam date and this decision was not going to change.
For Verbal I concentrated on SC and did the same from
Manhattan prep and from gmatprepnow. The video lessons are amazing there!
March - July 2017: Given that my concepts were brushed up in PS, DS, and SC I took a decision that helped shape my entire journey. Instead of focusing on a particular concept i decided to just learn. Each day starting March till July End i just sat down each night and did questions from the 700-level tag. I kept a log of concepts that i was not doing well in. Small concepts such as a 30-60-90 triangle area. And that is all i did. With no goal, except the idea to learn and apply i kept doing questions. I had no idea where my score was headed, but i could see myself improve in SC. I was able to spot splits efficiently and i was able to apply logic in DS and PS.
In mid-july i wrote a veritas test for the first time in forever. I scored a 640 and was terrible disappointed. But something seemed off, as my timing was not right and i was struggling to keep myself at 2 minutes. While at the same time the gmatclub timer i followed religiously and had never had a paroblem.
I decided to write a manhattan exam the next day and scored a 700! I wrote another manhattan exam the week after and score a 690. I realised then that the 700 was not a fluke and that i was solving at that level.
The week after i decied to write a Veritas exam again and score a 710.
August 2017 - I had still not booked a date because i had been prepping with no goal in mind. Now i realised it was time to book the date. I booked for a week later. I then wrote a test each day. I score 2 710s in Veritas and a 640(extreme pressure as i gave this right after booking my date) and then a 700, 690. At economist i scored a 750 and Kaplan i score a 710/720. In the final mock from gmat prep i scored a 730. I gave this a day before my test.
I had given so many mocks that the day of the exam felt no different. I took coffee and snickers and went and gave the exam and score a 720.
Key takeaways: My prep method was unorthodox. No date booked, and prepping without any definitive markers for performance. But here is what mattered - I enjoyed prepping. I enjoyed the math and the English and i enjoyed the challenge that the exam gave.
At the end of the day, it is gmatclub and the timer that saved me!
P.S - I am planning on writing the exam once more, as my split is with a 49 in quant while in the mocks i was touching 50/51. And suggestions from people who retook the exam from this point would be appreciated.
