Moussaillon
Hi everyone,

I am creating this topic since I am looking for advices to improve my Verbal score and I don't find old topics addressing specifically my situation.

Background

I am an undergraduate student in a top-tier Business School in France willing to apply to MiM or MiF for next year (I am on the Dean's List in my school).
I am doing an exchange-semester and will do a final internship next semester (starting in January). I already know it will be difficult to work hard on the GMAT while doing my internship (consulting) and would like to take the exam before January.
I want to apply as soon as possible and I target a 700+ since I want to apply to top schools.

Resources

I started working on the GMAT in mid-september and went through all Manhattan Prep books (from 1 to 8 - 6th edition), I have just finished the exercises from OG2018.
Regarding the study plan, I started working on the quant part and then worked on the verbal part while still practicing Quant exercises from the OG. I use GMAT Navigator and time all the questions I do in order to use an error log.

I did a first diagnostic test before the preparation (early September) and scored 480 (Q34 V23), I was really stressed and finished each section with more than 20 minutes remaining.

Quant
I started to practice my quant for about a month. I covered MGMAT Books and did the "mid-term" and "final exam" exercices (which are basically questions from the OG) advised by MGMAT.
After having covered MGMAT Books in Quant, I did a CAT (only Quant) on the official platform and score Q39. I was very nervous and finished the section with 10 minutes remaining. Two days after, as I now I was too stressed during the CAT, I took a MGMAT CAT and scored Q45.

Verbal
I started then to cover MGMAT Verbal Books while still doing exercises from OG2018 in Quant (when I was done with all the questions, I did again the ones where I got wrong).

I used the same technics for Verbal Books (went through MGMAT books and then did "Mid-term" and "Final exam" advised by MGMAT).

After having covered MGMAT Books in Verbal, I did a CAT Exam (11/4/2020) on ManhattanPrep and scored 590 (Q42 V31), I had to rush on the Verbal part if I remember well since I wasn't well prepared with timing of this section.

I reviewed my errors and put them on a PowerPoint while still doing about 1h of Quant and 1h of verbal questions (almost) every day.

5 days after (11/9/2020), I did another CAT on ManhattanPrep and scored 640 (Q44 V33).

Regarding the questions I did to practice, for Quant I used an old edition of Advanced Quant from ManhattanPrep (I only practiced the Workout Set, around 7 or 8, most of the time I got wrong on the questions or spent more than 2mins/2mins30 and had to guess) and did questions from the OG18 for the Verbal part.

Both times I did the CATs, I felt questions in Quant were a bit hard and keeping the timing was a bit difficult. 5 days after (11/14/2020) (maybe I practiced too much CAT) I took a CAT on the official platform in order to have better idea of where I stand and got a 660 (Q48 V32). For the Quant part, I had to guess or move on in some questions because I felt I would spend too much time, but I felt questions were not impossible, I only had to keep the timing so couldn't work until getting the answer.

Since the last CAT I did, I had time to do again all the questions in Quant where I got wrong (I didn't do these questions since few weeks so I didn't remember the solutions), I think it is the second or third time I do the questions, and I finished (today) all the questions from the Verbal part of my OG18.

I am planning to take a CAT on ManhattanPrep tomorrow to see if I improved my score in Verbal, I think I won't look that much to my Quant score since scores on MGMAT are really lower than what I got on the official platform.

What to do now ?

I am now wondering how I should practice now to improve my score with around a month or less ?

I can spend around 2h each day working 5 or 6 days a week. I really like working on Quant questions but I know I am easily distracted when I work on Verbal Questions.

I think I should still work my Quant without putting too much effort in order to be sure that I will get (at least) Q48 on the real exam. I am thinking about doing the final Workout Set from the old version of Advanced Quant I have, or doing questions from GMAT Official Advanced Questions (I have the PDF, the solutions are in mandarin but I will be able to find useful explanations on the forum). I was thinking to do the "new" questions from OG19, OG20 and OG21 but I think there are mainly "easy" questions so I should focus on harder ones.

Regarding Verbal, this is where I am really lost. I don't know if I should do the "new" questions from OG19, OG20 and OG21 or if I should directly work on the book GMAT Official Advanced Questions ?
Maybe I should also do again the questions where I got wrong in my OG18 for the Verbal part ? But as I finished the book today maybe I will remember the answers so I think I should wait maybe a week or more.

I will take into consideration all your advices and I hope that I have been clear enough !
Thank you in advance to all of you !!

Hi Moussaillon,

I improved my verbal score from 26 to 38. You need to focus on the right approach to solve verbal questions on GMAT. I have made a couple of debriefs about what I did differently. You might find them helpful.

Hi Moussaillon.

The key to getting GMAT verbal questions correct and to answering them in the allotted time is learning to see what's going on in the questions.

GMAT verbal is a bit different from GMAT quant, in that, whereas in many cases, you can increase your quant score just by learning some new concepts to apply, verbal is more of a game that you have to learn to play. In other words, your verbal score may not go up just because you have learned some new concepts, such as what a participial phrase does or how a Weaken question works. To achieve a verbal score increase, you have to spend a lot of time practicing applying the concepts and playing the game.

To learn to play the verbal game, you have to develop your ability to see what's going on in the questions by analyzing many practice questions choice by choice and coming up with clear, logical reasons for eliminating or choosing the choices. Often people spend 20 minutes or more per question analyzing the choices and coming up with ways to articulate what's going on with the choices.

So, to improve your verbal performance, you could first go back over the verbal questions you have answered already and seek to clearly articulate why every answer choice is correct or incorrect. Doing so could easily take 10 minutes to 1/2 hour per question. While you may already know which choices are the correct answers, I am sure that you can better articulate why the choices are incorrect or correct than you did the first time you saw the questions.

Then, having analyzed all the questions you have already answered, you would move on to answering fresh questions, very slowly and carefully, seeking to get close to 100 percent of them correct.

By working in this way, you can develop the skills you need to hit your verbal score goal.
