Received an invite about 12 hours ago. I can't have an off campus interview in Africa though. Is there an option of a phone interview or skype? What are the odds of being admitted after an interview at Wharton? I mean, Does the school give our a large amount of interview invite relatively to available spots in class?
According to others it seems that Wharton works on a 40%/40% system. About 40% of applicants get interview invites and 40% of the interviewees are accepted. That leads to ~15-16% of all applicants who are accepted.

Hi there. I am located in New England and received an interview invitation yesterday (Thursday) at about 3:20 pm EST. I am an HCM candidate, so perhaps they are doing HCM and Lauder applicants early on? I am R2, submitted my application on Jan 4th at about 2:30 pm EST.

Fingers crossed for others!

I'll say it again, though I doubt it'll help much because the feeling of anxiety/nervousness/etc. is so uncontrollable! Don't stress about when you get interview invites especially for somewhere like Wharton. As a R1 applicant, I received my interview like a week after the first date of interview invites. They really just haven't gotten to your app yet. I don't think they're read on a first-come, first-serve (i.e. when you submitted) basis, and each adcom who reads apps has his/her own way of dividing up how to read each stack.

Plus, if you feel like this the whole time, you may collapse from the stress before you even make it to the interview! :)

There you go. There have been US invitations and also Africa. So they clearly sent invitations all over the world, and both to plain MBA candidates and HCM/Lauder etc. NO PATTERN. So either they will be sending out invitations on daily or on a weekly basis. We will know in a few hours. But it would be interesting to know about dings. Do they only send dings out on the last day or parallel to invites?

Dings are only sent out the last day.

If you're dinged you'll find out on the 28th of Feb.

"The Admissions Committee will release interview invitations between Thursday, January 26th and Tuesday, February 28th. Due to the nature and complexity associated with the admissions process there is no particular order in which invitations are released. Also on February 28th, the Committee will release all final admissions decisions to candidates that are not being invited for an interview and therefore no longer being considered for admission.

If you are invited for an interview, you will need to complete your interview by Friday, March 9th. Interviews will be available on campus with second-year Wharton MBA Students who are full members of the Admissions Committee and off campus in various "Hubs" around the world by Admissions staff members. All interview options are equally considered within the admissions process."

Indeed. I forgot about that. So we should start getting quite anxious around the 24th of February... Until then we should just relax and wait for that email to come.

I would think that the acceptance rate among interviewees would be more like 60% (given not all of the applicants accept Wharton). See PQ for more:

THE PERCENTAGE OF APPLICANTS WHO REJECT THE BUSINESS SCHOOL THAT ACCEPTS THEM

School Rejection Rate Applicants Who Say No Applicants Accepted Total Applicants
University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) 30% 367 1,224 6,442

That isn't what krzt asked. I think they want to know: given that you got an invitation to interview, what is the % chance of being accepted to Wharton? People have said that in the past, Wharton has invited 40% of applicants to interview, and of those they accept around 40%. It has nothing to do with how many people actually end up there.

I think that jbond's reasoning makes sense, if you believe that 40% of all applicants get interviews and that the yield on admitted students is 70%.

The enrolled class last year was 13% of all applications, so if 30% of admitted students decline, Wharton needs to admit 19% of its applicants. And if 40% of all applications get interviews, then about half of those interviewed would need to be admitted to reach the 19% of all applicants.

And from most estimates, last years acceptance rate was also 19%. So this seems spot on.

It doesn't make sense to accept more people than they can actually have in class just after interviews, they can't predict how many people are going to decline. That is what the waitlist is for, to fill in the gaps. At the end of the process the acceptance rate might be 19% but at this stage it should be on the 40%/40% estimate.

I would think it is pretty common practice to accept more people than schools have places for. Most schools have similar yields year after year and probably do a pretty good job of predicting it. As it is, many top schools have yields of around 50% and I find it hard to believe that half the students who end up enrolling go of the waitlist.

My thoughts exactly. Most schools can look at decades worth of historical data and estimate, likely within a few percentage points, the number of people that matriculate. In years where less than expected enroll, they go to the waitlist. In years where more people enroll, well they accept more people. These schools aren't military academies that by law can only accept so many candidates.

I think the waitlist is more to see who else comes along in subsequent rounds opposed to being a reserve pool to meet quotas regarding number of students, although it does serve both purposes. It's also noteworthy that not everyone accepted off the waitlist decides to attend either.
