Hi,

I gave my diagnostic on 12th June 2020.

GMAT PREP 1 - 440 Q29 V22

Since then I have been preparing all by myself. Over a period of 4 months I have given many mocks. Here is the list:

Manhattan GMAT 1 - 620 Q43 V32 - 11th August 2020
Kaplan 1 - 630 Q45 V32 - 21st August
Veritas Prep 1 - 620 Q43 V32- 30th August
GMAT Prep 2 - 620 Q44 V31 - 13th September
Kaplan 2 - 700 Q46 V40 - 21st September (not inflated, every question was new as far as I remember)
Kaplan 3 - 680 Q44 V39 - 28th September
GMAT Prep 3 - 650 Q45 V35 - 5th October
Kaplan 4 - 650 Q44 V35 - 12th October

Study material for quant used -
OG
Manhattan GMAT
GMAT Club Tests (currently going though them)
GMAT Club Math Book

I have gone through the basics thrice now. I get the 500 level questions correct. 600 level accuracy as per my error log - 87.9%.
What should I do? I have plan for Master's in Finance, and a strong quant score strong is needed. I am doing everything that is recommended. I even narrowed down on my weak spots within this past week, yet Q44. I have plans to give the GMAT during the late October or early November.
. I will give the GMAT whether I improve in quant or not.

Note - I know many will tell me to opt for a course. But, I cannot. I am still in college and am trying to save for my applications! I hope you guys understand.

I feel like giving up now. I don't even remember how much time I have spent on prep. Probably more than 200 hours.

Thanks!

Hi! Don’t give up! Everyone has experienced a plateau. My advice would be that you learn to guess! This has moved my score 30 points up or so. Check out the Economist GMAT Prep - during one week of free access study as much quant materials as possible (overall volume of free content is capped, so don’t waste it on verbal).

Yes, even I read the guessing strategies in the MGMAT book. I think I will start doing that now, because I find it difficult to finish quant on time. I sometimes end up taking 4 minutes on a question if I find it difficult.

Thanks!

Yeah, I did have the same issue. What helped me with the pacing was to find a pattern in those questions I take forever to solve and simply learn to skip them. I used to think: oh, gosh, now after another book I will finally ace inequalities - well, no, just wasted precious minutes again. Just skip! Towards the end of the exam the questions get easier so not getting to them is a disadvantage😃 best of luck!

Specifically with regards to spending too long on quant problems, this is a sign that you're using inefficient approaches.
