Hi
vinrar, GMAT
doesn't test this frequently.
For some verbs, the choice is quite clear from a
usage perspective. For example:
i)
I enjoy swimming.
ii)
I enjoy to swim.
Clearly most people will instinctively go with
gerund (I enjoy
swimming). However, for most other verbs, it boils down to
memorizing whether a verb should be followed by
infinitive or
gerund. However, the silver lining is that
most verbs are followed by
infinitives (except for some verbs such as
enjoy,
delay etc.).
Similarly, whenever
intent needs to be expressed, one would typically go with
infinitives. For example:
i)
I study hard to score well on GMAT.
ii)
I study hard for scoring well on GMAT.
Since the
intent of my act of studying hard is to score well on GMAT, we would use
infinitive (
to score well on GMAT).
p.s. Our book
EducationAisle Sentence Correction Nirvana discusses
this usage of Gerunds Vs Infinitives, its application and examples in significant detail. If someone is interested, PM me your email-id; I can mail the corresponding section.
