I was working at a big 4 in finance for 1.5 years. Then left to pursue a strategy role at a startup. 1 month into the job i dont feel like this is for me and want to go back to my previous firm where i have good relations with my colleagues. Will this be a hindrance in my mba application? What if i hide this during my application? Will this come up in the background check? In case i go back to previous firm, i dont plan on quitting till i pursue my MBA.
I am planning to apply for fall 2025 class and will have 3 year work ex by then.

Its not going to be a deal breaker for sure. If you disclose it, you can explain it in the application form. If you don't disclose it, and the career gap is not more than 1-2 months even that should be ok so long as you can manage it with your HR.

I would not hesitate to talk about it either and explain my rationale for quitting (promise of better work aligned with your bigger plans)

Will this come up in the background check? I was planning to get hands on business experience, but the situation here was very bad so I left to go back to Finance instead of looking for business opportunities elsewhere. What does managing with HR mean? Like asking them to give an amended letter of employment as though i never left the firm?

Hello Bazinga42,

This will not affect your MBA applications.

In case, you choose to hide your work experience, universities are fine with gaps in your profile. However, you need to justify it with a list of extracurriculars focusing on your profile as well as long-term goals.

If you choose to add it to your profile and justify your switch, it will help you build the trust factor in your applications. Additionally, your Big 4 work experience will attract the brand value in your applications.

Adcoms are looking at diverse portfolios. We're happy to discuss this in detail with you over a free strategy consultation session with our MBA experts.

Most B-schools are fine with gaps <3 months, so not disclosing the move wouldn't really be an issue.

However, acknowledging the move and having a narrative would show that you are honest, take risks and prioritize longer-term goals. Given the big-4 brand, this factor shouldn't be of concern, if the rest of your application is strong.

my goal post mba is to get into MBBs. I am currently doing valuation consulting and wanted to get hands on business experience so left the firm. Things were really bad at the company so i left and came back to vaulations given that MBB is still possible after MBA. Would this be a sufficient reason?
If not, can I hide this 1 month stint? Would it come up during background checks?
