The Idiom usage is incorrect for the meaning of the sentence, the intention of the author is to show that there is a transition/change of a certain thing into something else. However this choices seems to say that the transformation is happening back and forth between X and Y.
The Idiom usage is perfect; however, the usage of "that of a benevolent force" is wrong - There is no meaningful referent/antecedent for that. Eliminate.
