what does evolve: academic, serious study, history, interest or focus.

(C) A serious study of history, for academics who undertake it - correct

The meaning of the sentence is that:

According to the academic(s), a serious study of history often focuses on familiar period first, but later evolves into detailed examination of less familiar periods.

History by itself does not involve detailed examination, it is the serious study that can examine less familiar times. Once a study is valid then fact is added to history. A study can be debatable not history by itself.



(A) An academic who undertakes a serious study of history
This choice considers 'An academic' as the subject( person noun) who focuses and evolves....wait a minute....how can an academic evolves into an examination? This is illogical. Examination is connected to a study. Eliminate and look for other options.


(B) For an academic who undertakes a serious study of it, history
The subject here is history. History evolves into an examination, again doesn't make sense. Eliminate.

(C) A serious study of history, for academics who undertake it,
This option makes perfect sense with the subject, A serious study of history. A serious study focuses first on X and evolves into an examination of Y. Keep.

(D) An academic undertaking a serious study of history
Same issue as option A. Eliminate


(E) When undertaking a serious study of history, an academic
Same issue as option A. Eliminate


So, the best answer choice is C.

Incorrect. history doesn't focus and frequently evolve - meaning doesn't make sense

Correct.

But E is better than A.

what does it refers to? eliminate

This makes study as subject which doesn't makes sense with verb focuses

(E) When undertaking a serious study of history, an academic
This looks good. The first relative modifier before the comma modifies the event/situation
