12 Days of Christmas 2024 - 2025 Competition with $40,000 of Prizes

This question was provided by GMAT Club
for the 12 Days of Christmas Competition

Win $40,000 in prizes: Courses, Tests & more

At Skyline Construction, project materials represented 38% of its annual project costs of $925,000,000 in 2023. Due to new environmental regulations and a shift toward sustainable building, project materials will account for 42% of total project costs in 2024, while total project costs are expected to decrease by 3%. Within project materials expenses, raw materials consistently make up 85% of costs, while recycling and waste management account for the remaining 15%.

In the table, select for Raw Materials Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to raw materials, and select for Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to recycling and waste management. Make only two selections, one in each column.
We are tasked to determine the approximate projected costs for Raw Materials and Recycling/Waste Management for 2024 based on the provided information.

[*]2024 total costs:
925000000 * 0.97 = 897250000
[*]2024 project materials cost:
897250000 * 0.42 = 376845000
[*]Raw materials cost:
376845000 * 0.85 = 320318250 approximately 320000000
[*]Recycling/Waste management cost:
376845000 * 0.15 = 56526750 approximately 57000000

2024 total project costs: $925M × 0.97 = $897.25M

2024 materials costs (42%): $897.25M × 0.42 = $376.845M

Split materials costs:
Raw Materials (85%): $376.845M × 0.85 = $320.32M
Recycling/Waste (15%): $376.845M × 0.15 = $56.53M

Answer:
Raw Materials Cost 2024: $320,000,000
Recycling/Waste Management Cost 2024: $57,000,000

Pretty straightforward and calculation based:
decrease 3% of $925M = $897.25M
42% of the new 2024 total project costs = $376.8M
Then simply calculate raw materials at 85%of 376.8M= $320M and recycling at 15% of $376.8M = $57M

Let's approach this problem step by step:

1. Calculate the total project costs for 2024: 2023 costs: $925,000,000 2024 costs: $925,000,000 * (1 - 0.03) = $897250,000

2. Calculate the project materials costs for 2024: 42% of $897,250,000 = 0.42 × $897,250,000 = $376,845,000

3. Calculate the raw materials costs for 2024 (85% of project materials): 85% of $376,845,000 = 0.85 x $376,845,000 = $320,318,250

4. Calculate the recycling/waste management costs for 2024(15% of project materials): 15% of $376,845,000 = 015 × $376.845,000 = $56,526,750

5. Match these calculations to the closest values in the table: - Raw Materials Cost for 2024: $320,318,250 - $320,000,000Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024: $56,526,750 - 57000000 (approx)

Therefore, the correct selections are:

Raw Materials Cost for 2024: $320,000,000

Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024: $57,000,000

In the table, select for Raw Materials Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to raw materials, and select for Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to recycling and waste management. Make only two selections, one in each column.

The total project costs for 2024:
Total project costs in 2023 = $925,000,000
Decrease in total project costs in 2024 = 3%
Total project costs in 2024 = $925,000,000 * (1 - 0.03) = $925,000,000 * 0.97 = $897,250,000
Calculate the projected cost of project materials in 2024:
Project materials will account for 42% of total project costs in 2024.
Projected cost of project materials in 2024 = $897,250,000 * 0.42 = $376,815,000
Calculate the approximate projected cost devoted to raw materials and recycling/waste management:
Raw materials make up 85% of project materials costs.
Recycling/waste management accounts for the remaining 15% of project materials costs.
Approximate Projected Costs for 2024:
Raw Materials Cost: $376,815,000 * 0.85 = $320,577,750 (closest option is $320,000,000)
Recycling/Waste Management Cost: $376,815,000 * 0.15 = $56,522,250 (closest option is $57,000,000)
Therefore, the approximate projected costs for 2024 are:
Raw Materials Cost: $320,000,000
Recycling/Waste Management Cost: $57,000,000

What I have found is even in TPA questions where unique answer is possible to calculate using given data, "ratio' b/w the two values in the given columns can greatly help.

Here as well simply look col 1: col 2=85:15
i.e Raw Material Cost =(17/3) recycling cost

from the options recycling should be $57,000,000 {since should be divisible by 3}
{I know question did mention 'approx cost' but i would still try to go with this one first and see if we can find a suitable value, if not then i would use $70,000,000}

but here using recycling = $57,000,000 we get raw material =323,000,000 --> approx 320,000,000.

DONE!

Annual project costs of $925,000,000 in 2023 & in 2024, total project costs are expected to decrease by 3% hence the annual project costs in 2024 will be equal to $925,000,000*0.97=$897,250,000 roughly

Project materials will now account for 42% of total project costs hence 897.25 million dollars*0.42=$376,845,00 roughly

Out of these costs, 85% of the costs go towards Raw Materials Cost & the remaining goes to Recycling/Waste Management Costs:

Hence those costs in 2024 would be:
Raw Materials Cost=$376,845,000*0.85=$320,000,000 (roughly)
Recycling/Waste Management Costs=Remaing costs(Total Costs- Raw Materials Cost)=377-320 million dollars=$57,000,000

In TPA questions its always better to form a strategy first before solving. Well this is a detail bulky question.

The stem tells us that;
  • At Skyline Construction, project materials represented 38% of its annual project costs of $925,000,000 in 2023
  • project materials will account for 42% of total project costs in 2024
  • total project costs are expected to decrease by 3%.
  • raw materials consistently make up 85% of costs
  • recycling and waste management account for the remaining 15%.

And we have to select;

  • for Raw Materials Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to raw materials
  • for Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to recycling and waste management

IN 2024;

Project materials = 42% of (100-3) % of $925,000,000

Hence,
raw materials recycling and waste management
85% of 42% of (100-3) % of $925,000,000 15% of 42% of (100-3) % of $925,000,000
~320,000,000~57,000,000

Hence we can fill in respective options

Step 1: Calculate Total Project Costs for 2024
Total project costs in 2023: 925,000,000.
Total project costs are expected to decrease by 3% in 2024:
2024 Total Project Costs
2024 Total Project Costs=925,000,000×(1−0.03)=925,000,000×0.97=897,250,000.

Step 2: Calculate Project Materials Costs for 2024
Project materials will account for 42% of total project costs in 2024:
Project Materials Costs
Project Materials Costs=897,250,000×0.42=376,845,000

Step 3: Split Project Materials Costs into Raw Materials and Recycling/Waste Management
Raw materials make up 85% of project materials costs:
Raw Materials Costs=376,845,000×0.85=320,318,250≈320,000,000.

Recycling and waste management make up 15% of project materials costs:
Recycling/Waste Management Costs=376,845,000×0.15=56,526,750≈57,000,000.

Final Answer
Raw Materials Cost for 2024: $320,000,000.
Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024: $57,000,000.

Calculator is mandatory for this problem.

For time-efficiency, remove all zeros.

Annual cost in 2023 = 925;
Decrease in 3% in 2024 = 925*0.97 = 897.25;

raw materials from project materials for 2024 = 0.85(0.42(897.25)) = 320(approx.); Option C
Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024 = 0.15(0.42(897.25)) = 57(approx.); Option E

There is lot of info an calculations that are involved. But if you see the last line " Within project materials expenses, raw materials consistently make up 85% of costs, while recycling and waste management account for the remaining 15% "

So clearly our option choices has to be in the same rations 85:15 = ~5.66.

Of the options the only possible pair is 320... & 57.... Because 320/57 = ~5.61..

Hence IMO $320,000,000 & $57,000,000

The answer is 320,000,000 and 57,000,000

Project cost = 925,000,000

3% decrease in the cost = 97/100 * 925,000,000 = 897250000

42/100* 897250000 = 376845000

85/100*376845000 = 320,318,250 approximated to 320,000,000
15/100*376845000 = 56,526,750 approximated to 57,000,000
