12 Days of Christmas 2024 - 2025 Competition with $40,000 of Prizes

This question was provided by GMAT Club
for the 12 Days of Christmas Competition

Win $40,000 in prizes: Courses, Tests & more

At Skyline Construction, project materials represented 38% of its annual project costs of $925,000,000 in 2023. Due to new environmental regulations and a shift toward sustainable building, project materials will account for 42% of total project costs in 2024, while total project costs are expected to decrease by 3%. Within project materials expenses, raw materials consistently make up 85% of costs, while recycling and waste management account for the remaining 15%.

In the table, select for Raw Materials Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to raw materials, and select for Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to recycling and waste management. Make only two selections, one in each column.

We truncate the number by a million to perform our calculations.

New Project Cost = 0.97 * 925

Cost of Project Material = 0.42 * 0.97 * 925

Raw Material = 0.85 * 0.42 * 0.97 * 925 = 320.31

Recycling and waste management = 0.15 * 0.42 * 0.97 * 925 = 56.52

Raw Material = $320,000,000
Recycling and waste management = $57,000,000

Hi everyone :)

The goal is to find the cost for Raw and Recycling/Waste.
I will count all number as divided by 10^6.

Year 2023: 0.38*925 = 351
Year 2024: 925*0.97 = 897, 0.42*897 = 377

Taking the total cost of 377 (millions):
Raw = 85% = 320 (millions)
Recycling/Waste = 15% = 57 (millions)

Raw materials = 320m and recycling/waste = 57m

Since we have on-screen calculator for TPA, we can do this using the calculator.

2024 total project costs = 0.97*925m = 897.25m
2024 project materials = 0.42*897.25 = 376.845m
2024 raw materials = 0.85*376.845m = 320.31825m = 320m
2024 recycling/waste mgmt = 0.15*376.845m = 56.52675m = 57m

1. Total Project Costs in 2024:
  • Decrease by 3% from $925,000,000.
  • $925,000,000 - 3% ≈ $900,000,000.

2. Project Materials Costs in 2024:
  • Will be 42% of the total project costs.
  • 42% of ≈$900,000,000 ≈ $378,000,000.

3. Recycling/Waste Management Cost:
  • 15% of ≈$378,000,000 ≈ $57,000,000.

4. Raw Materials Cost:
  • $378,000,000 - $57,000,000 ≈ $321,000,000.

Answer:

Raw Materials Cost for 2024: $320,000,000
Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024: $57,000,000

Analyze: Project Cost 2023 PC = 925,000,000
Material Cost 2023 = 38% (However, this is irrelevant)

2024 PC = (1-3/100) * 925,000,000 = 897,000,000
Material Cost @ 42% = .42 * 897,000,000 = 376,000,000

85% of Material Cost = .85 * 376,000,000 = 320,000,000
15% of Material Cost = .15 * 376,000,000 = 56,000,000

Project Cost 2023 (PC) = $925,000,000 = 925*10^6
Project Materials 2023 (PM) = 38%*PC = 38%*925*10^6
Project Materials 2024 (PM') = 42%PC'= 42%*[(100%-3%)*925*10^6]
Raw materials (RM)= 85%*(42%*97%*925*10^6) = 85/100*42/100*97/100*925*10^6 ~=~ 320 *10^6
Recycling & Waste (RW) = 15*(42%*97%*925*10^6) ~=~ 565 * 10^5

=> Ans:
RM = 320*10^6
RW = 57 *10^6

(since question ask for approximate, 42 = 40, 97 = 100 & cancel out 100*100*100 with 10^6, then find the closest ans). Or else I don't know how to ans the question within allowed time.

The quickest way to solve this question is to figure out the ratio between the material cost and the recycling cost which is 85 is to 15 that is 17 to 3 looking at the option. The only possible option choices are 3,20,000 and 57000

Making 925000000 x 0.97
then taking 42% of it,
then split into 85% and 15%. we get

320,000,000 and 57,000,000 approx.

Total Project Costs for 2024:
$925,000,000 × 0.97 = $899,750,000.

Project Materials Cost (42% of total):
$899,750,000 × 0.42 = $377,895,000.

Raw Materials Cost (85% of project materials):
$377,895,000 × 0.85 = $320,000,000.

Recycling/Waste Management Cost (15% of project materials):
$377,895,000 × 0.15 = $57,000,000.

In the table, select for Raw Materials Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to raw materials, and select for Recycling/Waste Management Cost for 2024 the approximate projected cost devoted to recycling and waste management. Make only two selections, one in each column.
  1. 2023 Total Project Costs: $925,000,000.
  2. 2024 Total Project Costs: A 3% decrease means:
    0.03×925,000,000=27,750,000
    Subtract this from $925,000,000:
    2024 Total Project Costs≈897,000,000
  3. 2024 Project Materials Cost: Project materials will account for 42% of total costs:
    0.42×897,000,000=376,740,000
    Approximate to $377,000,000.
  4. Breakdown of Project Materials:
    • Raw materials: 85%. 0.85×377,000,000=320,450,000. Approximate to $320,000,000.
    • Recycling/Waste Management: 15%. 0.15×377,000,000=56,550,000. Approximate to $57,000,000.
