(A) which was published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim in that it won both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize - Both X and Y is correct. Hence this option is wrong.
(B) published in 1982, bringing her the widest acclaim by winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize
(C) published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize
(D) was published in 1982 and which, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, brought her the widest acclaim
(E) was published in 1982, winning both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize, and bringing her the widest acclaim. Both X and Y is correct. Hence this option is wrong.

Only Option C is free from error.

Lets get the theme -

Although Alice Walker
published a number of essays,.........during the 1970s
her third novel, The Color Purple published in 1982 brought her the widest acclaim

(A) which was published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim in that it won both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize - Incorrect
(B) published in 1982, bringing her the widest acclaim by winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize - Incorrect
(C) published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize - Correct

published .....published.....brought
Winning ->comma+Verb-Ing = Presents results of preceding clause
Correct Use of Both_______ and ________

(D) was published in 1982 and which, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, brought her the widest acclaim - Incorrect
(E) was published in 1982, winning both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize, and bringing her the widest acclaim - Incorrect

Hence IMHO (C) is correct in all aspect...

Although Alice Walker published a number of essays, poetry collections, and stories during the 1970s, her third novel, The Color Purple, which was published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim in that it won both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize.

(A) which was published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim in that it won both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize
- The sentence should read both X and Y.
Both X and as well as Y as it is written here is redundant.
(B) published in 1982, bringing her the widest acclaim by winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize
Run on sentence - The colour novel , modifier , bringing her ...
This sentence lacks a verb and hence incorrect.
(C) published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize
- Correct All S-V agreement taken care of
(D) was published in 1982 and which, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, brought her the widest acclaim
usage of and which is incorrect.
(E) was published in 1982, winning both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize, and bringing her the widest acclaim

same error as A - winning both as well as is redundant usage.

Although Alice Walker published a number of essays, poetry collections, and stories during the 1970s, her third novel, The Color Purple, which was published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim in that it won both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize.

Meaning of the sentence : Although AW published a number of essays, poetry collections and stories. Her third novel, published in 1982, bought her widest acclaim. The claim made her win both the National Book and Pulitzer Prize

(A) which was published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim in that it won both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize
Three issues:
1) "which was" is redundant. The sentence can have "published in 1982" which can work as a modifier.
2) "in that it" -> we require a cause and effect relationship. "in that" provides a reason and this can work better with "Verbing or participle modifier" to show cause and effect
3) Both X AND Y -> is a idiom . "As well as" doesn't go with Both

(B) published in 1982, bringing her the widest acclaim by winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize
Two issues:
1) "Published" is a modifier and it is with comma pair, so cannot be a verb.
2) "bringing" is a participle modifier modifying "Color Purple" which is correct. But if published and bringing are both modifier then where is the verb?

(C) published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize
Correct

(D) was published in 1982 and which, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, brought her the widest acclaim
Here "was published" is a clause. We have a conjunction "and" so which should refer to "Color Purple". "winning" is a modifier which modifies "Color Purple". if we use this construction, the meaning changes and instead of cause and effect relationship, now "winning" is modifying the book.

(E) was published in 1982, winning both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize, and bringing her the widest acclaim
We have Clause + Comma + verbing modifier -> winning and bringing. So these two modifier should modify the previous clause which doesn't make any sense.
How can mere act of publishing can win her the prizes -> illogical meaning

C seems okay. Just a clarification: Does novel win price or the author? If answer is author than C is wrong because it suggests that Novel won the price. Any comments?

In the answer option A how come ' in that it' is wrong... The sentence may mean...that winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize award brought her the widest acclaim. What am I missin?

Thanks. :)

Enasni,

The closest choices would be A and C but the principle of concision that GMAT prefers requires that answers be in the most concise form possible so that the meaning is not changed. On that basis C is the better one. The OG calls it Rhetorical Construction while manhattan guides term them "wordy/redundant".

Senthil7, choice A is just wrong. conciseness is consider later. grammar comes first.

A uses BOTH...AS WELL AS. this is wrong.

Despite option C is the correct answer, I seriously doubt that it is logical.

The phrase "... winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize" refers to "The Color Purple" (Alice Walker's third novel).

A novel cannot win a prize. It is rather the writer who wins a prize.

A incorrect and E incorrect
both X and Y is correct idiom

B. lacks in verb for the subject "her third novel"

D. lacks parallelism

C. is the correct

published in 1982 is the modifier for "her third novel"

V+ing modifier is correctly used to express results of the preceding clause...

Hope it helps

(A) which was published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim in that it won both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize
(E) was published in 1982, winning both the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize, and bringing her the widest acclaim

'Both X and Y' is the right idiom. A and E are out.

Sentence is in past tense and hence we should use 'brought' instead of 'bringing'. B is out

(C) published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize . correct sentence. Maintains parallelism.
(D) was published in 1982 and which, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, brought her the widest acclaim . 'and' indicates parallel marker. But, which is lacking in the beginning of the sentence.

C is the answer

Still don't understand why B is is incorrect. If B is missing a verb, why C is correct.

Choice B:
Although Alice Walker published a number of essays, poetry collections, and stories during the 1970s, her third novel, The Color Purple, published in 1982, bringing her the widest acclaim by winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

Although (Co-ordinating conjunction) | Alice Walker (Subject) | Published (Verb)
Subordinating conjunction + Subject + Verb ------ Dependent Clause

Her Third Novel (subject) + bringing (not a verb).
Subject + NO Verb ------ NOT Independent clause

Dependent Clause + Comma + NOT an Independent Clause --- Wrong construction

Choice C
Although Alice Walker published a number of essays, poetry collections, and stories during the 1970s, her third novel, The Color Purple, published in 1982, brought her the widest acclaim, winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

Although (Co-ordinating conjunction) | Alice Walker (Subject) | Published (Verb)
Subordinating conjunction + Subject + Verb ------ Dependent Clause

Her Third Novel (subject) brought (verb)
Subject + Verb ------ Independent clause

Dependent Clause + Comma + Independent Clause --- correct
