Project SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

A majority of society argues that neither technology nor genetics is to blame for rampant childhood obesity in society.

A) argues that neither technology nor genetics is to

B) argue that neither technology nor genetics are to

C) argues that neither technology nor genetics are to

D) argue that neither technology or genetics is to

E) argues that neither technology or genetics are to

Majority is singular so "argues" is correct
neither nor fixed
Either/or, Neither/nor- the verb takes the form of the closest noun, i.e. whatever comes after Or /Nor.
So "Genetics are" is correct
Ans. C

A majority of society argues that neither technology nor genetics is to blame for rampant childhood obesity in society.

A) argues that neither technology nor genetics is to-> we have Neither....Nor...used. So, whatever comes after nor decides verb to be singular or plural. Here, deciding subject is "genetics". So, "is" is incorrect.

B) argue that neither technology nor genetics are to-> A majority is Singular, so we need argues, not argue. Incorrect.

C) argues that neither technology nor genetics are to-> Subject verb agreement corrected (argues) and "are" is used. Let's keep it.

D) argue that neither technology or genetics is to-> A majority is Singular, so we need argues, not argue. Incorrect.

E) argues that neither technology or genetics are to-> we have idiom "Neither....Nor", not or. Incorrect.

So, I think C. :)

However, I believe "Genetics" is a singular Noun. Therefore, the verb following "Genetics" must be singular, not plural.

Answer A.

A majority of society argues that neither technology nor genetics is to blame for rampant childhood obesity in society.

1. Use of 'neither...or...' is incorrect. 'Neither...nor...' is correct. Eliminate D and E
2. In 'Neither...nor...' construction, the verb must agree with the subject that is closest to the noun. In this case 'genetics' is the subject.
3. When academic subjects are taken as subject, they are singular, but when they are used to refer to a set of something, they are plural.
e. g. genetics is to be blamed. Here, genetics is singular
Statistcs indicate that.....Here statistics is plural.
4. 'A majority of society......' Here, the subject is society, which is singular.

A) argues that neither technology nor genetics is to
Correct

B) argue that neither technology nor genetics are to
genetics are is incorrect

C) argues that neither technology nor genetics are to
genetics are is incorrect

D) argue that neither technology or genetics is to
'Society argue' is incorrect.
Use of 'neither...or...' is incorrect.

E) argues that neither technology or genetics are to
genetics are is incorrect.
Use of 'neither...or...' is incorrect.

Choice A is the answer.

Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-
generis

Project SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

A majority of society argues that neither technology nor genetics is to blame for rampant childhood obesity in society.

A) argues that neither technology nor genetics is to

B) argue that neither technology nor genetics are to

C) argues that neither technology nor genetics are to

D) argue that neither technology or genetics is to

E) argues that neither technology or genetics are to

Concepts tested here: Subject-Verb Agreement + Idioms

• “neither A nor B” and “either A or B” are idiomatic uses and are only used when referring to two elements.

A: Trap.
1/ This answer choice incorrectly refers to the plural noun phrase "neither technology nor genetics" with the singular verb "is".

B:
1/ This answer choice incorrectly refers to the singular noun "majority" with the plural verb "argue".

C: Correct.
1/ This answer choice correctly refers to the singular noun "majority" with the singular verb "argues".
2/ Option C correctly refers to the plural noun phrase "neither technology nor genetics" with the plural verb "are".
3/ Option C correctly uses the idiomatic construction "neither A ("technology") nor B ("genetics")".

D:
1/ This answer choice incorrectly refers to the singular noun "majority" with the plural verb "argue".
2/ Option D incorrectly refers to the plural noun phrase "neither technology or genetics" with the singular verb "is".
3/ Option D incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction "neither A or B"; remember, “neither A nor B” and “either A or B” are idiomatic uses and are only used when referring to two elements.

E:
1/ This answer choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction "neither A or B"; remember, “neither A nor B” and “either A or B” are idiomatic uses and are only used when referring to two elements.

Hence, C is the best answer choice.
