A recent survey of women diagnosed with breast cancer found that 85 percent of them reported wearing a brassiere on a regular basis. One possible conclusion is that wearing a brassiere can cause breast cancer.

To evaluate the conclusion above, it would be useful to know the answer to all of the following questions EXCEPT:

A) Did the women surveyed have any known risk factors for breast cancer such as cigarette smoking, sedentary lifestyles or high-fat, high-cholesterol diets?
B) What is the percentage of women who report wearing a brassiere on a regular basis yet never develop breast cancer?
C) What is the percentage of women in the general population who report wearing a brassiere on a regular basis?
D) Given that a predisposition for breast cancer can be inherited, did the women surveyed have a family history of the disease?
E) What percentage of women who report wearing a brassiere on a regular basis are diagnosed with other types of cancer?

IMO E.
E here discusses percentage of women who report wearing a brassiere on a regular basis are diagnosed with other types of cancer
We don't need information for other types of cancer and it is because of this reason that E seems to be irrelevant and hence, the correct answer choice.

I would say our correct answer choice here is option E.

Answers to all other statements would provide us with additional information to put the original conclusion into perspective.

However, as we are talking about bras potential effect on developing breast cancer, it is totally irrelevant to learn about its potential relation to other causes of cancer. Therefore, I would argue that "E" is the clear winner due to irrelevancy.

Hope this helps.

Chris

C would be helpful as it allows you to put the initial information into perspective.
It would enable to draw a conclusion based on how the facts look in comparison.

Best regards,
Chris
