IMO D

According to a recent study, adolescents require nine hours of sleep every night, more than other ages require.

A) more than other ages require - Need to compare a class of people - Adolescents to another class

B) more than people of other ages require - cannot compare sleep with people.

C) more than those of other ages do - Those has no logically antecedent which creates distortion in meaning.

D) more than the requirement of other ages - Keeps the meaning and is more clear- X requires 9 hrs of sleep every night which is more than the requirement of other ages.

E) more than other ages - Requirement is compared with ages.

"Ages" don't require sleep; people do. Most answers compare how much sleep adolescents need with the amount of sleep other ages need, which doesn't make sense. Only answer B compares the sleep required by people of adolescent age with the sleep required by people of other ages. Posts above mine suggest sleep and people are compared in B, but that's not what's happening -- B should be read to say:

adolescents require nine hours of sleep every night, more {sleep} than people of other ages require.

I suppose you could read C to make the right comparison too, but "those" in C is ambiguous, so B is better.

According to a recent study, adolescents require nine hours of sleep every night, more than other ages require.

A) more than other ages require -> adolescents should be compared with people, not with the other ages. Incorrect.

B) more than people of other ages require -> Here comparison is better. As we are comparing "adolescents" with "people of other ages". Let's keep it.

C) more than those of other ages do -> those of refers to "adolescents" then we have "adolescents of other ages"....It doesn't make sense. Incorrect.

D) more than the requirement of other ages -> "adolescents" are compared to "requirement of other ages"...Incorrect.

E) more than other ages -> Same error of comparison. Incorrect.

So, I think B. :)

A) more than other ages require - ages don't require sleep, people do. Incorrect

B) more than people of other ages require - Correct: Comparison is right

C) more than those of other ages do - replace those with adolescents. Does not make sense. Incorrect.

D) more than the requirement of other ages - Wrong comparison and ages do not require sleep (meaning) Incorrect

E) more than other ages - Meaning and comparison issue. Incorrect

A) more than other ages require---> wrong comparison. Adolescents is a group and cannot be compared to other ages.

B) more than people of other ages require-----> Correct !! require could be replaced with do. But this option by far is the best.

C) more than those of other ages do------> Wrong comparison and meaning error. adolescents are compared with those of other ages. Those creates ambiguity. Does those means adolescents of other ages. That completely changes the meaning my creates a senseless sentence.

D) more than the requirement of other ages-----> Wrong comparison. Adolescents and requirement are wrongly compared.

E) more than other ages------>Wrong comparison. Adolescents and other ages are wrongly compared.

According to a recent study, adolescents require nine hours of sleep every night, more than other ages require.

Intended Meaning: Comparing the adolescent with People of other ages
Error Analysis:
1. Incorrect meaning: As per sentence comparing adolescent with other ages and not people of other ages
- other ages is a number can not be compared with adolescent

A) more than other ages require
- Comparison error as highlighted above

B) more than people of other ages require
- Correctly comparing the people of other ages with adolescents

C) more than those of other ages do
- Pronoun antecedent error
- No logical reference for THOSE

D) more than the requirement of other ages
- Convoluted
- Also incorrect comparison

E) more than other ages
- Incorrect comparison as highlighted above
