I got an offer to join the school and I am super stoked about it! BUT, I also got a really great job opportunity which I'd very much like to take up. What are my options here? I think its a great role and would definitely contribute to my work experience (which could work out from a class diversity perspective) and get me that much closer to my long-term career goals.
A bit about the job - It's a landmark project with the government (think 20 year plan to improve livelihood of an entire state in a country) I'm in the non-profit space so this isn't for the moolah but more about the experience as well as the network and relationships I'd build working everyday with senior government folks as well as a top notch consulting firm (also working on the same program, recruits heavily from the school)
Do you think I could ask the school to let me work on this for a year and join the next class (starting in 2022)? I couldn't find much on the forum about deferrals for jobs and from the little I did see, its mostly frowned upon Has anyone asked for this before? I know it kinda sounds like me having my cake and eating it too (which is what I believe the school will think) but its a once in a lifetime gig for me. However, I don't wanna give up the admit cause I'm an international and I'm pretty sure its gonna be hard applying and getting accepted again. It's a draining process, not one I'd like to take up again.

Given the past year and impacts from COVID, I think schools are very strict in offering deferrals outside of absolute necessity. Your new job opportunity wouldn’t count. Your options are Kellogg now or the job and reapply from my perspective. If you believe this job is better than the prospect of going to business school now, then it is your decision. However think hard about whether this is an indispensable opportunity you need for your future career.
I agree with the previous poster. I doubt you will be granted a deferral given everything this past year and, in general, the school's policies regarding deferrals. As a first step, you could always ask the AdCom. They will not hold it against you.
If this truly is a game changing type of role for you as you claim, then you should pass up on the MBA and go for the position. For many, an MBA is designed to help you land such a dream job. You may find that you do not need the MBA to progress in your career. Despite the many benefits of the degree, you will save yourself tons of money and may see a faster-than-expected career acceleration.
