Some schools have an Early Admit round, which is binding. You have to join the college otherwise it is not ethical or even legal. Its debatable if the school takes action or not in the case of an early admit and not joining. If yours is an R1/R2/R3 admit you can do as you like. Admits in regular rounds are not going to be binding. But just be civil about it and inform the Adcom as soon as possible

Hi everyone,

Sorry if this has been asked - might not be a common situation. I was recently admitted to School A in R1, but there is School B that I like better (think top half of M7) but I didn't apply to it because I didn't think I would get in. I realize I made a mistake and should've given it a shot.

Now, can I keep the offer from A and apply to B in R2? And if I get an offer from B next Spring and withdraw from A, will I get into trouble? I know it's not the best thing to do but just want to know if it's a feasible option at all.

Thanks so much

Hi Congrats on your admit. As long as this was not an Early Action Binding admission, you are just fine (Fuqua and CBS are the only Top 15 schools with Early Binding Rounds if my memory serves me right).
With other schools and other rounds, you can just shop around but you will lose your deposit if you switch.

As redskull1 pointed out, if you haven't got into a b-school which made you a binding offer, you should be good to apply to other programs. If SchoolA asks you to deposit some money to reserve your space, then at best you will land up losing that, should you get into program B and decide to join here. That said, its not a nice thing to first commit and then reject (as in any relationship), but you've got to do what you've got to do. A waitlister at b-school A will thank you.
