why b is wrong ?
because Edison is far from "he".

B is wrong as the subject immediately following the comma of the modifying phrase "Although he patented over 1,000 inventions,..." does not make logical sense. Who patented over 1,000 inventions? Edison! B seems to think that "it was his invention" that patented 1,000 inventions. Inventions cannot patent something, but Edison, the person, can!

Also I find "it" hanging unnecessary or ambiguous

Hello Anuj6221,

We hope this finds you well.

To provide a bit of clarity on this point, the use of "it" is not exactly unnecessary or ambiguous; here, "it" functions as a placeholder pronoun. The error here is that "Although he patented over 1,000 inventions" modifies "it" rather than "Thomas Edison"; remember, in a “phrase + comma + noun” construction, the phrase must correctly modify the noun; this is one of the most frequently tested concepts on GMAT sentence correction.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
