Although to provide Internet access through wearable technology Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.

A. Although to provide Internet access through wearable technology Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames. Proper Noun "Google" is better than Prepositional phrase (highlighted) to act as a Subject

B. To provide internet access through wearable technology, although ‘unchic’ glasses have been launched by Google with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.
"To provide internet access through wearable technology" should be followed by Google (Active Voice) to correct modifier error. Comma before IT creates a Run-on.

C. Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames. Comma before IT creates a Run-on.

D. Although providing Internet access through wearable technology, Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen and has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames. - "Although providing Internet access through wearable technology". Use of AND without any punctuation creates RUN-ON

E. Although Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames. - Comma before IT doesn't create a Run-on because the previous clause is Sub-ordinate.CORRECT

Thus the Answer has to be E

Hope it helps.

A. Incorrect - "Although to provide technology Google". Although introduces comparison, however the way the phrase uses an incorrect sentence structure and possibly a modifier issue. Per the meaning of the sentence, I believe "Although ... technology" is meant to modify Google. However, there is no comma.
B. Incorrect - 1) similar modifier issue as in A 2) unnecessary passive voice introduced "glasses have been launched by Google"
C. Incorrect - Two independent clauses are connected by a comma, which is incorrect. IC#1 is "Google ....wearable technology" + , it + IC#2 "it has approached; 2) missing comparator "although" as per sentence A.
D. Incorrect - "providing" is wordy/unnecessary; "and has approached Warby Parker" creates a list that shifts the meaning of the sentence and makes it illogical. The comparison introduced between "although" Google introduced internet glasses AND the glasses had a bad design is lost.

hello E-gmat,

Logically and gramatically E seems to be the correct answer. however option E misses out on an important information (hence changes meaning).
Choice E states that google approached Warby Parker to design more fashionable frames.
But as per choice A google approached Warby Parker to help it design more fashionable frames.

Thanks every one for participating in this question/poll.

Here are the statistics for this question:

Number of responses - 42
14% people answered this question correctly.
Choice E was the most popular choice with 69% votes. All of those who chose this choice failed to notice that this choice misses out a very crucial information. Warbt Parker was approached by Google to help them design more fashinable glasses. Google did not approach WP to design the glasses.

Also, for those of you who selected the correct answer, I suggest that you go through the official explanation to confirm that your rationale for rejecting the incorrect choices was sound. Remember its important to select the correct answer, but equally important is that you should reject the incorrect choices for the right reasons. :)

Thanks.

My pick is E.

Wrong. "Although to provide" is not grammatical.

B. To provide internet access through wearable technology, although 'unchic' glasses have been launched by Google with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.
Wrong.
- "Although" is never put in the middle of a sentence.
- "although..........tiny screen" does not match with "it has approached....." in terms of meaning.

C. Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.
Wrong.
- Need a contrast, so "although" CAN'T be omitted.

D. Although providing Internet access through wearable technology, Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen and has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.
Wrong.
- "has approached" should be separated from "has launched" to show a correct contrast.

E. Although Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.
CORRECT "it" correctly refers to Google.

Although to provide Internet access through wearable technology Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.

Correct: A. Although to provide Internet access through wearable technology Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.

"It" here refers to Google. -Google has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help Google design more fashionable frames. . Basically, Google needs a help.

B. To provide internet access through wearable technology, although 'unchic' glasses have been launched by Google with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.

C. Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.

D. Although providing Internet access through wearable technology, Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen and has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.

E. Although Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.

It refers to Google. Google has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames. In this choice Google is designing frames, so the choice E changes the meaning.

Are these questions vetted? I'm new here and not sure how it works. To me, it doesn't seem like the answer provided in this case is correct....highly doubt "although to" is correct but there could be some obscure rule I don't know. However, to avoid learning bad information I would like to know how these things get on the forums. Can anyone just make up questions and post them here?

IMO answer is E

A is wrong --> to help it, "it" is ambiguous. Google approached Parker to help Parker OR Google approached Parker to help Google

B is wrong --> 'unchic' glasses seems to be the main subject of the sentence due to the usage of passive voice. That leads us to think that the glasses "has approached Warby Parker"

C is wrong --> run-on sentence which lacks coordinating junctions such as and/but between 2 independent clauses. Google (subject) launched (verb) no coordinating junction it (subject) approached (verb)

D is wrong --> seems to indicate that although Google provided "Internet access through wearable technology", it also did something else unrelated, which is not the intended meaning

Although I felt that to provide phrase should be after Google has launched and there was no comma, I could not figure any strong reason to eliminate option A.

proceeding into other choices

There are three-two split among answer choices
to help it design and to design
google will approach parker to get the design frames means that google will ask parker to deign frames. While it is not the intended meaning. The google just requests the parker's help so that google can design better frames.

to design is completely wrong here.

B. To provide internet access through wearable technology, although 'unchic' glasses have been launched by Google with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.

Repeats above mentioned error.
unchi glasses wrongly modifies to provide internet access
antecedent for pronoun it is ambiguous.

C. Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.

Repeats above mentioned error.
misses the needed contrast although in meaning.

D. Although providing Internet access through wearable technology, Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen and has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.

present continuous tense changes the whole intended meaning in this option.
misses the needed contrast although misplaced in meaning.

E. Although Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.

to design error repeats here.

So A is the correct answer.

This is an egmat question.

Hi Nez,
We may not know what technology the Q is talking about but th efollowing point stands out.
1)The most important thing to look for in the original sentence is the contrast between two approach adopted by Google..
On the one hand, google is working on some unfashionable technology and on the other hand , it i sapproaching some company for a fashionable technology
2)the second thing which one realizes after going through the choices is " does Google want the company to help design the new tech or wants to completely out source the development part"..
Ofcourse we have to go with original...
Armed with these info, we can look at the choices now..

A. Although to provide Internet access through wearable technology Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.
It follows both the point and ofcourse moves along with th eoriginal meaning

B. To provide internet access through wearable technology, although 'unchic' glasses have been launched by Google with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames....
It has changed the meaning on both the aspects. The sentence as such may be able to just survive grammatically, but changes the meaning completely

C. Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.
A case of run-on sentences... again changes the meaning on both aspects we are looking for

D. Although providing Internet access through wearable technology, Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen and has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.
It keeps the original meaning on point no 2, but although keeping the contrast alive, it changes the items being contrasted as shown by coloured portion

E. Although Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.
A choice most similar to A or even a shade better as far as the structure of 'Although dependent/concessive clause ' is concerned but changes the meaning in the main clause..

So, A is the answer not because it is most stylishly written but because the most clear and eloquent choice available does not carry the original meaning....

Given the structure "Although to provide.." is not wrong, A is correct.
Otherwise
E is grammatically more promising since it carries a bona fide Noun and Verb; of course it has the "meaning issue"

Option A also carries a noun and verb - the dependent clause (starting with "although") in both options are same except that the prepositional phrase "to provide internet access through wearable technology" has been shifted from the beginning of the clause in option A to the end of the clause in Option E. Both are gramatically equally promising . As you have correctly identified that option E has a meaning issue, A is the correct choice.

Although to provide Internet access through wearable technology Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames. Correct Answer.

A. Although to provide Internet access through wearable technology Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.

B. To provide internet access through wearable technology, although 'unchic' glasses have been launched by Google with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames. Wrong: 'To provide internet access through wearable technology' wrongly modifying 'unchic' glasses.

C. Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames. Wrong: The contrast is not clear in absence of although.

D. Although providing Internet access through wearable technology, Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen and has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames. Wrong: Providing changes the meaning. It looks like, Google is already providing internet acces. So, it might be launching 'unchic' glasses for some other reason.

E. Although Google has launched 'unchic' glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames. Wrong: It looks as if 'tiny scree' is going to provide internet access

Hi Folks,

Thanks for all your analysis. Here comes the detailed explanation of this question.

Although to provide Internet access through wearable technology Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.

Meaning Analysis
• This sentence presents contrast.
• Google has launched certain glasses:
o These glasses contain a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen.
o These glasses are not very attractive.
o The purpose of launching these glasses is to provide internet access through wearable technology.
• Even though Google has LAUNCHED these glasses, it has approached Warby Parker so that Warby Parker can help it design more fashionable frames.
o Warby Parker is an online eyeglass company.

Errors in Original Sentence
• Clause 1: Although Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, providing Internet access through wearable technology,
• Clause 2: it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.

1. All the S-V pairs are accounted for.
2. All the verbs are written correctly in present perfect tense
3. The pronoun reference is correct.
4. The use of comma + verbing modifier “providing…” and other modifiers is correct.
5. There are no errors in the sentence.

PoE:

A. Although to provide Internet access through wearable technology Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames: Correct Choice.

B. To provide internet access through wearable technology, although ‘unchic’ glasses have been launched by Google with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.: Incorrect.
Error 1 – The prepositional phrase “with a computer processor,…” now illogically modifies Google. This modifier must modify “glasses” as in the original sentence.
Error 2 – The original sentence says that Google approached Warby Parker to help Google design more fashionable frames. However, this choice says that Warby Parker was approached not to help design the frames but to design to frames. This is a clear shift in meaning.

C. Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.: Incorrect.
Error 1 – Two independent clauses “Google has launched…” and “it has approached…” have been joined by a comma. This is ungrammatical.
Error 2 – It repeats the meaning error of “to design” as in choice B.

D. Although providing Internet access through wearable technology, Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen and has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to help it design more fashionable frames.: Incorrect.
Error –Per the original sentence, the contrast is – Google has launched glasses BUT it has approached WP to help it design better frames. Per this choice, the contrast is – Goggle has provided Internet access through wearable technology BUT Google has launched unchic glasses. This contrast is illogical. Actually by launching those glasses, Google has provided Internet access.

E. Although Google has launched ‘unchic’ glasses with a computer processor, a battery, and a tiny screen to provide Internet access through wearable technology, it has approached Warby Parker, an e-commerce eyeglass company, to design more fashionable frames.: Incorrect.
Error - It repeats the meaning error of “to design” as in choice B.

Takeaways
1. The correct answer choice must contain all the information presented in the original sentence.
2. Omission of some words may lead to change in the meaning of the sentence. Be wary of such choices.
3. Two independent clauses cannot be joined just by a comma.
4. The contrasting elements must be grammatical and logical.

Hope this helps. :-)
Thanks.

Hello techiesam,

Thank you for the query. :-)

The original sentence says that Google has launched glasses. But Google has approached some other company to help it design better frames as Google glasses are "unchic". So the contrast is valid in the original sentence.

Now, as far as the parallelism is concerned in the original sentence, the structure still maintain Although X, Y in which both X and Y are clauses. Please note that to provide... provides the intent of the action has launched. Hence this phrase is a modifier for this action. The modifiers do not affect the parallelism of the core elements that make the parallel list.

This topic is covered in details with apt examples in the concept named Parallelism: Helpful Tips in our SC course.

Hope this helps. :-)
