Amongst refers to the group 'philosophical constructions'.
Hence, 'those' is more appropriate than 'that'.

C is better than D IMHO.

Isn't this resorting to guesswork? There's no rule that in the idiom "among those of X, Y..." Y has to be plural or singular?

Well, 'among' is used to compare more than two things together. 'Among those' is comparing 'those' with each other. Since 'Amongst' is not underlined, we can assume the comparison of more than 2 things.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks. I guess this one boils down to diction and style. I doubt if D would be grammatically incorrect?

Yes but that still doesn't answer the That vs Those question.

IMO, the comparison is happening between 'philosophical constructions' (plural) and THOSE of Plato (Plato's philosophical constructions -- plural)

Among is not used for comparison.

Among all the students, boys were the noisiest.
Among all the students,John was the noisiest.

Both the above sentences are correct. The question is of poor quality.

I agree that there is no such evidence that proves that Plato made only one philosophical construction, or there were more than one. I got confused in between C and D either.
Amongst does state many. But the question is asking about the one Plato made. There could be 1 or many.
Both options are Apt in their own place.
Abhi077 Please share the reasoning

Can you provide an explanation to this dilemma?

Author intends to compare philosophical constructions of plato with philosophical constructions of other philosophers. Hence plural ‘those’ is correct.

And yes, Among is used for comparison between more than two things.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

In this sentence the reference is to philosophical constructions this is indicated using the pronounthose and notthat: therefore choices A and D are incorrect.
In choice B , the adjective grand should be in the comparative degree in keeping with the preceding adjective taller. Hence the correction is those of a Plato seem to stand a bit taller and a bit grander.

Only choice C is the correct answer.
In option E the adverb undeniably is misplaced and the comparative degree oftall jetaller" should be used to maintain parallelism.

Hence answer Choice (C) is correct.

But how one find that? That author is talking about 1 philosophical construction or more than 1
Since there are many people in comparison. The constructions denote all of their constructions as well.

People are not compared here. Philosophical constructions by ancient philosophers have been compared. among them, constructions of Plabo stand apart.

I am not saying people are in comparison, but the constructions. Let say there is a group of 10 people, whose philosophical constructions are been compared.
Plato is one among the group.
How to find whether The philosophical constructions are only 10 for 10 people or they have more than one for each of them?
Because no number or marker is given to determine whether the Plato have only 1 philosophical construction or more than one.

So, am I supposed to read about Plato?

GMAT doesn't use standard country names, artist names in CR.
What if in some question they give a random artist?

Are you sure about that?

Btw, this is SC we are not talking about and not CR.

There have been many instances wherein names of famous authors have been used in official GMAT questions

For eg. have a look at these official questions.

https://gmatclub.com/forum/emily-dickin ... 10142.html

Who is Emily Dickinson? She's a famous American poet.

https://gmatclub.com/forum/bengal-born- ... 34342.html

Who is Rabindranath Tagore? he is a philosopher too. Also, in this question, 'India' has been used

Of course, GMAT doesn't expect you to know about Plato, although he is one of the greatest philosophers in history, but then, by understanding what the author is trying to convey, you can derive that a philosopher's work is not limited to a single theory or unit.

Nonetheless, I'm not vouching for the question either. It may be flawed in many ways. that being said, one must stick to the official GMAT questions for practice and maximum learning. there are more than 100,000 questions out there and not every question is perfect or close to GMAT like questions. Some are of good quality, some are of average and some are poor.

This question is sourced from Time4GMAT and I have posted an Official explanation as well. Thank you :)

Well, that winds up the issue.

It was courteous of you to take out time and present, aspirants like me, questions from various untapped sources.
Obviously, nothing can beat official question repository.
But nonetheless, some "outsiders" sometimes teach some valuable lessons.

Thanks, mate!
Cheers :exclamation
