Hello,

Please evaluate my profile for 2019 class of ISB.

I am an Automobile Engineer, currently working with BEML Limited (A Ministry of Defense Undertaking) as Assistant Manager- After Sales Service and would have a total work experience of 7 years by March'2018 of which 4 years in Marketing (after sales services) and 3 years in design and development.

I took my GMAT in Jan' 2018 and got an overall score of 690 (48 Q, 37 V, 5.5 AWA, 4 IR :( ). I am going to attempt GMAT one more time in March 2018 and is aiming for 730 overall score.

10th - 64.67% (HBSE)
12th - 63.00% (CBSE)
B.E. - 72.89% (MDU, Rohtak)

I don't have many certificates to vouch for my extracurriculars except for participating in College fest as discipline committee member. Also, my final year project won best industrial project award.

Current Role: I am looking after after-sales service of BEML Limited. My job requires me to travel extensively in interior areas of J&K along with Army and Border Road Organisation. I am leading a team of 3 service engineers and solve and guide service related issues pertaining to our equipment (Earthmoving machinery). We attend customer calls, provide them warranty support/ guidance to resolve service issues. I manage warranty spare part inventory to cater to future warranty failures and optimise spare inventory for reduced material handling costs. I also maintain all records related to equipment failures and provide regular feedback to production and design teams to avoid future failures and suggest design improvements to optimise equipment efficiency. I monitor equipment performance continuously and boost spare parts sales by recommending a purchase of original spares to customers.

I was promoted once in my total stay of 6 years at BEML Limited.

I love to play Snooker and watch cricket. I am learning to play the flute but is currently a novice.

Post my MBA, I want to take on roles in operation management or strategy.

Target Schools: ISB, IIMA- PGPX, IIMB- EPGP, IIMC- PGPEX and XLRI- GMP (2019 Batch)

Please suggest me some additional courses or activities which I may indulge myself in to upgrade my profile and boost my chances of selection for 2019 batch.

I really appreciate the time you would take out to evaluate my profile. Thank you in advance.

ISB Round 3 deadline chances: MBA after PSU

Last year, ISB started with the Round 3. It wasn't clear if the selectivity will be as low as is the case with its global counterpart schools. Extrapolating the trend we’ve seen with international schools, it is safe to assume that ISB round 3 chances are low indeed.

When PSU professional Darpagiri Mondal approached us, he knew that he was going against the current by applying to the toughest GMAT program in India in the last round. However, with a sound application strategy and strong profile, he made it!

Hi Manish! Would appreciate an evaluation of my profile! Planning to apply in R1 this year.

26 y/o Indian male.

GMAT Score - 750 (Quant:50, Verbal:42, IR:7, AWA:6). Is not having an IR score of 8 a negative? If yes, I am open to re-taking the test. Also open to re-taking if a higher score significantly helps my chances.

Academics -
1. Class X (CBSE) - 96.2%
2. Class XII (State Board) - 87.3%
3. BTech (Instrumentation & Control Engg) from NIT Trichy (2016) - CGPA 6.53, first class.

Work Experience - 4 years at the moment
1. Currently working with a funded B2B SaaS startup (in the domain of marketing data analytics) since 33 months. I've donned a number of hats here including Growth, Sales and Project Management. Focused on Customer Success in the last 2 years. My role involves working with international teams at some of the largest publicly listed e-commerce companies in Europe; helping them implement and use our analytics product, training and advising them on best practices etc. It also involves quite a bit of stakeholder management, right upto the CXO level at these companies. Additionally, I mentor (and indirectly manage) 2 team members in the Customer Success function. I've played a key role during some of the most crucial times in the life of the startup, such as closing the first $200k deal, implementing the product for a customer with presence in 40+ countries, etc.
2. Previously was with a VC fund in India, running ecosystem engagements for a startup platform they were building (6 months).
3. Before that (and this was immediately after my undergrad) I ran overall ops and business development for an ed-tech startup, that didn't work out and had to be shut (9 months).

Extra Curricular -
1. I was the President of the Entrepreneurship Cell at NIT Trichy during the final year. Lead a team of 40+ and organized a number of pan-India events and initiatives.
2. I was the Treasurer of an intra-college festival at NIT Trichy during the third year. Solely responsible for the finances involved (substantial for a college fest), the overall size of the organising team was 200+.

Co Curricular -
1. Certification - Cambridge Business English (Higher - level C2)
2. MooCs - Brand and Product Management (IE Business School), Strategic Management and Strategy Formulation (Copenhagen Business School)
3. Attended a summer school at the University of Cambridge in the second year of college

Why MBA?
I want to move to product management, or tech consulting. Coming in from a customer-facing role in a software product company, I believe either of these is the logical next step. I think doing the MBA will give me a dual advantage of credential plus skills that would be necessary to crack into these roles.

Questions -
1. Is my profile differentiated enough from the rest of the typical pool? If not what can I do additionally to improve my chances?
2. What do you think is the biggest weak spot in my profile? Would also love suggestions on how I can address it?
3. Do you think I have a shot at any of the M7, INSEAD, LBS or HEC? What schools would you recommend I look at (where I have fair chances)?

theconsulguy, a few thoughts and perspectives on your profile/questions:
  1. The academic arc is a bit of mixed bag given the top notch NIT pedigree but a below average GPA. While I see you've done a bunch of impressive ECs, that alone may not be sufficient - was there any other assignable cause for it? This could be a bit of an Achilles heel overall. The GMAT score will certainly help. I wouldn't do it for IR but a higher score could help to a certain extent in overcoming this bit. But, if the question is about another attempt vs application work, I'd recommend the latter. A reattempt will only make sense if you can juggle the two effectively, in parallel.
  2. The professional profile is interesting but will need to be brought out in a well-connected manner so you get the right mileage. Lack of big brands could mean going the extra mile. The VC gig seems a bit of an aberration and will have to be defended well to ensure you get the right mileage from it, especially if with a known shop.
  3. For reasons mentioned here, we don't speculate on school selection or chances. That being said, I don't see why you shouldn't make a run for the top leagues. For European programs though, international experience matters. Have you had any?
  4. As mentioned earlier, the ECs in college are pretty good. That would make the lack (?) of anything after college stick out. Think about what hobbies/interests/passions you can showcase to avoid drawing a complete blank on this aspect. This is why ECs matter in your applications.
  5. The broad motivation for MBA is fair. Now work towards developing more clarity, granularity and specificity to devise a winning application.

Hope this helps some. Feel free to reach out directly for more discussion.

usagmatmba, a few thoughts on your profile:
  1. The academic background looks decent but the GMAT will be a hurdle. I see that you've already tried improving it. Perhaps you may want to explore GRE as some find it easier. In general, one can easily add 20-30 points to a given school's average to get a sense of the Indian GMAT average.
  2. The professional profile needs to be fleshed out further. While the accolades help, it will be good to understand the actual nature of your work and employer brand. The post-MBA plans will also have to be tweaked to have the right balance. Entrepreneurship can be a risky proposition in general. Marketing and IT operations are very different things. Some roles that software engineers seek after MBA more traditionally would be worth researching.
  3. The ECs look interesting. However, not clear if they are recent or all in the distant past? Schools like to see continuity and recency.

Hope this helps some. You've also reached out to us so we will continue the discussion there.
