vinayak576, 1. It depends on your family business and level of responsibility. 2. the schools you mention will likely want to see more work experience and a higher GMAT. Columbia actually has a fantastic family business program and January-entry option you may want to consider given your current profile. If you would like to discuss how our team can help with application strategy and GMAT prep please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]

Vedang1, It will be important to understand what you’re hoping to gain from the program and do after the program and then select schools based on this. If you would like to discuss how our team can help with school strategy and application support please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]

tobeornottobe, your target programs are going to heavily depend on your GMAT score. You’re going to want to aim for a 740+ for top 20 business programs, not only for admission but for recruiting in consulting. You have strong work experience so emphasize this, however you’ll need to be clear why consulting. If you would like to discuss how our team can help with application strategy or school selection please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]

Qorda, In order to be competitive for a top tier school and for scholarships, you’ll want to aim for a GMAT of 740+. You’ll also need a strong GMAT score to be successful in consulting recruiting. You do have good work experience so you could leverage this thoughtfully, but you’re probably going to need to aim for sub top 20 schools. If you would like to discuss how our team can help with application strategy and GMAT prep, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected].

ZTR2020, it would be hard to guess which school’s would accept a 600 GMAT. Probably schools below top 50 without knowing anything else about your profile. It is a holistic review so the whole package matters.

Hi anusharajjj123,

Thank you for sharing. Deferred MBA programs can be quite competitive. Because of this, it is key that you demonstrate leadership in your applications (your corporate internships should provide you with good material to do so). Leadership comes in multiple forms so even if you have not managed a team or a project, there are many ways to demonstrate your unique leadership!

It sounds like you have some strong extracurriculars and, if you secure a 740 GMAT, your test scores will look good as well.

What will really be important here is fine-tuning your career goals. Strong deferred MBA candidates will have a clear sense of their goals, though this often comes only after working together with a consultant on the applications so do not worry if goals feel murky now. While it's great that you are interested in financial services, you will want to think deeper and share your vision for improving your chosen field or company.

Personal MBA Coach helps a lot of folks get into top deferred MBA programs each year. Take a look at our deferred MBA packages to learn more about how we can help set you up for success at your target programs!

Best wishes,
Personal MBA Coach

Hi,

I am an 26-year old Indian Male Non-Engineer Finance profile candidate with a 760 GMAT. I've worked at a small boutique investment bank for the past ~4.5 years and I'm also a CFA Level III candidate.

My aim is to apply to UK-based schools (LBS and Oxbridge) primarily because I want to switch locations and gain exposure in a new country. I am looking to continue working in the same industry and my aim is to work in Corporate Finance/IB in UK for a few years. PE/VC is also an aim but I am keeping my options open as the chances for breaking into PE/VC are quite slim so I have to be realistic.

I wanted your guidance regarding the 'career goals' essay. I have worked on several debt deals in the Renewable Energy space in India and hence, I plan to mention that my short-term career goal is to work in the project financing/corporate finance division of an Energy firm (such as Lightsource) / IB firm with a focus on energy / an energy focused fund (such as Actis). My long-term career goal would to be start an Energy-focused fund of my own.

Someone mentioned to me that it would make sense to state that I plan to come back to my existing firm after MBA to secure a senior role and support the firm's growth into other markets. This would ensure that the ad-com does not consider me as a high risk candidate since I would be guaranteed employment in my home country. However, this does not feel authentic to me so I am not too sure about doing it. Do the career goals that I've stated seem high risk/hard to attain in LBS/Oxbridge?

Your advice would be much appreciated.
