I am going for R2 too and I am not doing any kind of PPT. Why should the admission guys tell us to chose any one were more comfortable with if they would only mark us down for doing exactly that?

In a nutshell, I doubt that they would be more favorably disposed to PPT. And I don't care what any consultant says either.

In for R2- have a question: Making PPT is not my forte, if I opt for the regular written essay as the alternative of the PPT, will my chances be hurt?
For those who got invites in R1, many congrats!- anyone of you did not choose the ppt format for that essay question?
Thanks a million!

According to your blog you decided not to apply to booth? That post inspired me to do the same despite having my application pack ready :)

Got into Booth w/ $$$! Would've chosen Booth over Wharton in a heartbeat (if money was the same), but a scholarship makes it that much easier! So many good things happening in Chicago. The school is on an unbelievable upswing and still rising. I've had many friends with scholarship offers, which is something to be said about the school's desire to attract the people they want. I'm no admissions consultant (and I don't have any "inside" knowledge), but if you have any questions about the app process, feel free to PM me.

Question from a real procrastinator: I still haven't found a way of putting together my story in a slide deck that I find satisfactory. I do have a few good essay ideas, plus a bunch of essay practice from other applications. Is anyone else considering the essay over the presentation? I've been browsing the forums but it seems like everyone is doing the slides... just want to make sure I'm not making a huge mistake...

Hey Canes, I too have submitted a 600 word essay instead of the presentation because I felt I could express myself better in an essay. The school clearly states that it is the content that they are interested in and not in the format. So I believe it should not be an problem. I have already submitted my application. Wish you the best.

I did the 4 slide PPT. I broke it into Sports (started a football team, snowboard, tough mudder, marathons, etc), Adventure (e.g. sky diving, kissing an alligator), Travel (had some really cool stories and unique locations, like riding an ostrich in kenya and being in Egypt during the Morsi overthrow), fun facts (some impressive and some funny trivia about me, put in a photo of me growing a moustache for the movember prostate cancer fundraiser). I put 3-4 pictures on each slide mirroring the bullets I made. I really felt the PPT made me look like a much stronger candidate than an essay could. I didn't use a consultant, but most online resources highly recommended doing the PPT.

I completely agree; the PPT is the way to go. If you use the essay, it better be really clear that it wasn't a modified version of some other app's essay. The PPT lets you convey yourself in a unique way, and it signals to them that you went out of your way to create something specifically for Booth. The pictures make all the difference.

I will vote for PPT every time. It might take a little inspiration to come up with the idea, but it was by far the most rewarding part of the application process.

I think the message is more important than the format. They said so in the question prompt.

I myself submitted a 600 word essay. My essay also covered 4 points. Two personality strengths, One principle and finally fit with booth and why booth. I talked about my long term hobby and personal activity that built strength #1 and strength #2. And showed how I used these strengths and made one work accomplishment and 2 more personal accomplishments. Then I talked about the principle I grew up with and how incident #1 evolved my understanding of this and made me into a better team person and leader. This would also show my rationale for joining two community service activities. I also slid a leadership anecdote from work which touched on how I used this principle. And finally I still had enough space left to show how my personality and goals fit with booth and identified opportunities at booth that are close to me and which I am excited about.

I had made up my mind to cover this on my Essay 2. But once I started I found it difficult to condense this in a 4 slide powerpoint and so went for the essay.

The admissions committee have made it clear in public that they judge both the essay and the powerpoint equally. If they say it so in public then they would obviously mean it. I don't think powerpoints would be viewed more favorably than essays.

I think the risk is, aside from the "Why Booth" section of your essay, you (and other applicants) run the risk of Booth thinking you just leveraged another essay. With the PPT they know you're serious about attending, and not using them as a back-up to HSW.

Yes. I did leverage other school's essays to write this one. Writing 5 other school's applications prepared me to write this essay and gave me enough material. But I don't believe that Booth will be upset with an applicant because (s)he used content from essays of other school. The essay is about "Broadening their perspective about who we are". It is not about going out of the way and doing something special for the school. I agree that given similar contents and idea, a powerpoint will look better than a 600 word essay because it shows the applicant has the ability to condense information and present it in an efficient way. But in my opinion this is only a by product of this question. I would rather give importance to answering the question and telling them who I am. If I am able to do that with a power point then great! but if the powerpoint impedes me in doing that then I am choosing the essay.

As a side note, Booth will not have to worry about me not attending their program. . Booth is a stretch for me and is the top most ranked among the set of schools I applied.

I understand that the adcom doesn't care whether it is an essay or a PPT, but the PPT is uniquely Booth and we, as students, still fondly remember our PPTs and do talk about them with our classmates! It was truly a fun part of the application and I would recommend it to anyone. Not because it will necessarily be better or worse, but because it's unique to Booth and we had fun doing our PPTs.

I did not answer Why Booth in my essays. I felt that if the school really wanted to know Why booth, they would have asked for it a separate essay. I think in some ways doing the PPT itself showed commitment to the school. So I just used my 4 slides to tell them different stories about myself.

After reading these forums , I am now slightly worried. Hope I am right !
