FROM Booth Admissions Blog: Why Chicago?

It’s a question I’ve been on the receiving end of several times, both before and after moving here. This question has been asked by family members, during job interviews, and by anyone who saw my California ID during the winter. It’s a question I have both relished and resented because it is a small question, but it compels a big answer. I’ve had a few different responses over the years but it all comes back to one thing: Chicago is different.

My home state had been good to me. I loved growing up in Los Angeles and attending the University of California, Berkeley, but after finishing my degree I was ready to start the next chapter in a new place. Chicago was consistently coming up on the list of people’s favorite cities in the world so I decided that it would be my destination. Since day one, Chicago has delivered on that high praise. The beautiful skyline, the varied and widespread centers of art and culture, the diverse network of neighborhoods, and the cuisine all . However, it was the intangibles of the city that really struck me.

Chicago is a city that both challenges and supports you. You can get lost exploring its many neighborhoods only to discover an area where you feel at home. You can stand shoulder to shoulder with strangers on a crowded ‘L’ train and find one of them is an old friend from high school. It’s a place where the best meal of your life could come from a Michelin-starred restaurant or a late night food truck. Chicago is a city that dares you to step outside your comfort zone and rewards you for your effort.

That spirit of challenge and support is also a cornerstone of the University of Chicago. I experienced it through working with the undergraduate community as the College Programming Coordinator, and also now  in my new role at Chicago Booth.

I joined the admissions team as Assistant Director in November and I’m excited to be working with the faculty, staff, and students at Booth as I help plan and coordinate our Campus Visit program and the Booth Summer Business Scholars Program. In this first month, I’ve been thoroughly impressed by our students who take time out of their schedules to get to know our visitors and candidly answer their questions about course work, extracurricular activities, or living in Chicago. The intellectually curiosity and commitment to “paying it forward” differentiates our students and that sense of collaboration and engagement carries through to our alumni community.  We strongly believe that getting the opportunity to experience a course, to talk to our students, and to explore our campus will give you a strong insight into what makes this place special.

At the end of the day, that Chicago difference makes if feel like a place where I truly belong and I know that I am not alone in that sentiment. Working at the University of Chicago has been a thoroughly enriching experience and I only see it becoming richer as a part of the Chicago Booth community. I look forward to welcoming prospective students and introducing them to our curriculum, culture, and community so they can find their own answer to “Why Chicago” and #WhyBooth.

All the best,

Glenn

For those on the WL, you can check out last year's WL thread here:
https://gmatclub.com/forum/booth-2013-calling-all-waitlist-applicants-144392.html?sid=f4bea6ee1db656b9326964decd0bd115

You may want to consider starting one of your own, as well. I found it extremely helpful for comparing strategies and keeping my own sanity. It's always good to know you're not alone.

Just wanted to make a quick post, as I too was waitlisted last year, and like Brandon, I know of at least six people in our class who were accepted off the waiting list, and that's just the people I actually know! I was a R2 applicant and was accepted in early June, whereas I know some people had to wait until late July.

However, echoing what has been said the video is very important. It needs to speak to you and what you will bring to Booth, and it should be new information not already presented in your application. Booth wants people that are risk takers and leaders, you need to show this in your video. Booth is not the type of school that holds your hand; you will be the one driving and shaping your experience so show that you are that type of person who can do this and can succeed at Booth. Fit is very important to Booth, so make sure that shines through in your video.

My best to those waitlisted. I was there last year, and know how it feels! I hope there is more movement on the waitlist this time.

On a side note, I have been accepted at Wharton and Booth, and so has been my spouse. We want to do this together, and she has a $50k (over 2 years) scholarship from Booth. Any suggestions on how to politely ask Wharton if they would like to match it?

PS - For the record, we are pretty undecided between W & B.
Shoot me a PM to discuss.

I can only speak from my experience at Chicago Booth, which only offers merit-based awards and fellowships. Other schools offer need-based awards, but I know very little about those.

Unfortunately, there is no magic formula. The best information really is what's published on the website. It basically boils down to how competitive you are as a candidate and whether your career interests align with any of the fellowships. Beyond what you are doing to set yourself apart as an applicant, there isn't much you can do. https://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/scholarships

on a similar note, can an applicant do anything regarding scholarships after getting an admit from Booth? I've gotten an admit but I haven't been offered any sort of scholarship. you've already said that Booth does not offer need-based awards but is there anything else that i can look into?

Scholarships would have been offered with your admit call. At least some (maybe all) fellowships are awarded after R2. There are also many scholarships available to 2Ys based on academic performance and/or career interest.

When I preview my application before submitting it, at the top it says "Round: 2013 Full-Time MBA Program Round 1". But just in the first page, all the other pages correctly say "Round 2"

Does anybody else have that problem?

Thanks!

FROM Booth Admissions Blog: A New Year....

Happy New Year to all. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and that you have already begun fulfilling your New Year’s resolutions. I started my year with the typical resolution – to get back into shape. That goal was met with me throwing my back out while playing basketball. So as I slowly get back to walking upright, I thought I might reevaluate my resolution and implement in a few months.

The good news is the new year brought many other exciting things to focus on. On December 19th we admitted our first round of applicants to the Chicago Booth Class of 2016, and over the next few months my team and I will be getting to know each of them. We have already had some memorable one-on-one moments making our congratulatory phone calls to the new admits, a tradition we started at Booth well over a decade ago. And after twelve years of making these calls, I can honestly say the experience never gets old for me. In fact, some of my most meaningful and lasting Booth relationships started with that simple call.

The entire admissions team truly enjoys the experience of calling the new admits and being the first to personally welcome them to the Booth community. It’s always fun hearing the range of responses from admitted students when we sit down together to recap our day of calling. We all have memorable moments and this year my favorite came from our Director of Admissions, Michelle Moore. This was her first decision day as part of our team, and she happened to catch an admit while he was in a meeting – something quite typical. His response to her congratulations will be remembered for a long time:

“I am in an awkward situation right now so I apologize that I am not displaying the proper emotion. I can assure you that as soon as I hang up the phone, I will scream like a teenage girl at a Justin Bieber concert.”

It is reactions like these that make all the hard work worth it, and gets us all excited for the many interesting conversations and candid moments still to come. January and February are the absolute busiest months for the Admissions team. Its’ a time when we’re getting acquainted with the new admits, while still considering Round 2 hopefuls to the Class of 2016 – trying to craft a class based on fit and excellence. Getting to know our admitted students better over the next few months fuels the anticipation of whom we will get to meet when Round 2 is finally complete in March.

So to those recently admitted students, congratulations and welcome to Booth. I look forward to seeing you at one of our admit events this month or at Admit Weekend in February. To those who are still in the process of applying, know that we are looking forward to learning more about you through your applications.

And finally to all, feel free to post your new year’s resolutions below. Perhaps I can find some inspiration. Happy New Year once again and best wishes on a great 2014!

Sincerely,

Kurt

Hey all, does anyone have any tips/know anything about chatting with Booth AdComm for increased scholarship money? I chatted with someone else who said that Booth does not negotiate and that it could hurt me so I wanted to hear if anyone else had any positive experiences. As some background, I got a half-ride at Booth but am in the running for a full-ride at Cornell, and would like to get more money from Booth so that I don't need to move forward with Cornell's fellowship process.

Apologies if this has already been discussed.

I have the same issue - I wouldn't worry about it! I'm sure our applications will still go through.

Question from a real procrastinator: I still haven't found a way of putting together my story in a slide deck that I find satisfactory. I do have a few good essay ideas, plus a bunch of essay practice from other applications. Is anyone else considering the essay over the presentation? I've been browsing the forums but it seems like everyone is doing the slides... just want to make sure I'm not making a huge mistake...
