I was wondering if the accepted rate among interviewed ED applicants was higher than the overall's (around 50%). My premise is that they shouldn't worry about our willingness to attend CBS, and that point leaves out many applicants in other schools after interview, don't you agree?

Hi all!

Trying to answer my own question. From the data collected in GMATClub, 36 applicants have done interviews. 5 of them have been denied and 11 are still waiting for interview or response from Columbia. Therefore, and according to this data, the rejection among interviewed applicants is between 14% and 44% (this last considering that all applicants awaiting for responses are dinged, very conservative). I would consider 20% as a good estimation of this rate (5 rejections over 25 applicants who do know the final decision). Much lower than the overall 50%!!

What do you think of all this? (Beyond I should be working on R2 instead of making these numbers... :-D )

Ciao!

I think 20% is too low and not very reflective. If you look at last year's overall stats, of those people who shared acceptance/denied, more people got admitted.
Even this year, so far there were more interview invites than denials. I don't think that's a good representation.

Hi all,

Applied ED 10/5, invited to interview 11/10, interviewed 11/16, complete 11/22.

I was sent notice today that I have been deferred into the regular applicant pool, and will have my final answer by Feb 1st. Any insight into this status? It is different from a waitlist per se I believe? I see very few people in this boat on the forum, but am curious what sort of position this puts me in. Also, how does this impact aid consideration?

Thanks!

i still dont know whether to apply to CBS, due to the "no loan for int'l" i dont have enough funding.

Any international here got some sort of merit/need based scholarship. I would be like 60k short not considering the internship money, so really like 40k.

Are you sure that isn't just no "government student loans?" You could probably qualify for private loans but it would make sense that if you're not a US citizen you wouldn't qualify for US subsidized loans.

no, there are no private loans for int'ls,

it is a columbia university policy and the bschool cant do anything about it. kinda sucks. much smaller schools have funding.

kellog doesnt either btw.

Hi all,

and nyc3637 - i share your fate...

Applied ED: 10/5
Interview call: 10/16
Interview: 10/30
Complete: 11/2
Deferred to be notified until Feb 1st: 11/30

And then, today, I got a call from them asking if I'd be interested in the J-term. Probably bc. my story is about entrepreneurship.

Is it their way of saying hey, its either J-term or nothing? Feedback/thoughts welcome!

The way I see it, Columbia is using the rolling admission process just like a giant waiting list. If your profile is not obvious (my case for example) but not bad either they will first benchmark you with the ED applicant pool. That could explain the late interview invite (same situation here). If you got the interview invite it means that your profile has called their attention. Now you are probably in the situation that they liked you but are not 100% sure about your admission; they want to see more RD app and benchmark you with more people to reach a conclusion. This is just my personal feeling about this whole admission process. Tomorrow I will "celebrate" my 2 month anniversary since I sent my application. A lot of people got an answer way before us (either positive or negative); which lead me to conclude that we belong to this question mark zone (not obviously in, not obviously out...).

Mine went under review too.

Do we know how many weeks we should expect to be waiting to hear of the first intervew invites for RD? I sent my app in late September.

For J-term 2012? (i.e. next month??) That's a nice short notice!
If you think you may not need an internship, that's not that bad...A great advantage of CBS is NY - so many students take internships during the year.

It may simply mean that your profile doesn't show you need an internship for your post-MBA goals, and they have some places remaining for J-Term.

Yeah - for next month. You're right, my goals revolve around a company that i've been incubating for the last 1 year and if things go as planned, i wouldn't need an internship. I'm assuming if I decline the offer (bc. i need to do more work on my company before I can join b-school and bc. i live/work internationally), will i be looked at again with the RD candidates or dinged.

I'd see this as chance to get your acceptance right now.
If you say no, then you'll have to wait another month or so for final decision. Don't assume at all that you'll be dinged if you say no. When giving you final decision to adcom, take the opportunity to explain well why you've made that decision, and how it plays with your post-MBA goals.
Good luck.
